New Year, Renewed Focus

It's a new year and a new semester full of resolutions that will be forgotten in a couple weeks (if not already). Although it is great to think we will all get our entire lives in order this year, it is probably more realistic to get one specific area in shape. Might I suggest your career readiness? No matter where you are in your college career, we can all do a little more to make sure life after college is something we can look forward to with excitement. Take a break from homework and Netflix for just 10 minutes and evaluate what you have been doing so far to prepare. Now take a deep breath and set some realistic goals to make sure you are more prepared at the end of the semester than you are now. Here are some realistic goals to get you started:

  1. I will meet with one professional this semester in a job/industry I am interested in pursuing and get advice.
  2. I will write a resume and have it reviewed by the Career Center during Drop-in Hours (Monday-Friday, 9:00-4:00) by February 1.
  3. I will log into Handshake ( and build my profile by the end of the week.
  4. I will find an outfit appropriate for interviewing or begin saving money to purchase a suit.
  5. I will use InterviewStream ( to practice my interview skills by spring break.
  6. I will start looking this week for an internship/job for the summer that will align with my professional goals.
  7. I will attend as many career fairs this semester beginning with the Internship and Part-time Job Fair on January 25 or the STEM Expo on February 14.

Remember to be specific and give yourself a deadline. Better yet, enlist a friend to do this with you and serve as your accountability partner. It may be overwhelming at first, but one step at a time you begin to reach your goals.

The 3rd floor office of the Career Center will be under construction for the spring semester so please go the 4th floor of Martin Hall for assistance. We will continue to offer the full range of services in this location and hours of operation will remain 7:45 AM – 4:45 PM with Drop-Ins offered from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM. If you have accessibility concerns, please call to arrange a meeting in an accessible location- 334-844-4744.
