Brunswick Middle School
Summer 2016 Newsletter
It is with mixed emotions that I close out this school year at Brunswick Middle.
Effective July 1, I will be working on special assignments in the Central Office until my retirement in December.
Brunswick will always hold a very special place in my heart. I began my teaching career as an 8th grade language arts teacher when BMS was simply portable classrooms behind Brunswick High School. I am ending my career as a principal right back where it all started.
Effective July 1, Jay Schill, current assistant principal at West Frederick Middle School, will assume the duties as principal at BMS. I know that he is excited to become part of the Brunswick Middle School community. I know that he will be welcomed warmly at the best middle school in the county.
This is the community that helped me grow as an educator, and I will deeply miss everyone: the students, staff, parents and community members.
Warm wishes to each of you for a wonderful and restful summer!
Summer Office Hours
Beginning on June 20th, FCPS will be closed on Fridays until the week of August 15. Summer staff may be out of the building at times due to vacations and scheduled meetings.
If you should need assistance, please call the main office at 240-236-5400.
Summer appointments for enrollments may be made over the phone.
The Thurmont Ministerium is sponsoring a free summer lunch program. See details below:
From the Health Room
Any medications your child has in the health room must be picked up by an adult by the close of the school day on June 17th. Please click HERE for detailed information about picking up student medications.
State Vaccination Requirements
All students entering 7th grade must have the following vaccinations for the 2016-2017 school year:
- single dose of Tdap (Tetanus, Diptheria, Pertussis) vaccine*
- single dose of M eningococcal vaccine (M CV)
*Tdap is not the same as the other Tetanus, Diptheria and Pertussis vaccines called DPT or DTaP. Even if your child received DPT or DTaP in past they will still need a single dose of Tdap. We do not want to exclude your child from school in August! Make your child's appointment now and avoid the rush. Bring the vaccination documentation to school as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please contact your child's health care provider or the school health room.
If you have questions for our health room technician, Linda Trabold, please call the health room at 240-236-5359.
If you have questions about our Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports at Brunswick Middle School, please contact guidance counselor Kelly Mahn: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Congratulations to Scott Strait, FCPS Teacher of the Year!
Way to go Mr. Strait! You make us all proud!

Summer Literacy and Math Opportunities
2016 Summer Math Programs
This year students have 2 options to help prevent loss of math knowledge over the summer months.
The first is TenMarks, an Amazon company. If your child was enrolled in the Tenmarks program during the past school year, they have access to this program. Please click the link below to access a parent letter along with instructions regarding beginning the program.
For all other students, there is another program that goes from June 20th until July 29th. This program reviews up through grade 7 curriculum. Please click on the attachment for information regarding this program.
If you have any questions regarding any of these programs, please contact Math Specialist Kim Schmidt at email@example.com
Have a great summer!
Wow, what a year we’ve had! We held or were directly involved in a multitude of events requiring volunteer support – the fall play (practices multiple days a week for three months plus the two performances), dance ticket sales, the dances (6 of them including the 8th grade formal), dance food donations, school store, PBIS socials, Spirit of America Day, distributing fundraiser items, staff back to school luncheon, staff lunch during conferences, multiple staff appreciation events the first week of May, and the list goes on. This volunteer effort totaled 3,215 documented hours! That is a tremendous amount of volunteer time. Thank you to the 122 volunteers who logged in these hours to benefit the students and our school. And thank you to the officers and chairpersons of the PTO that lead the charge and do so much behind the scenes. What we’ve accomplished this year could not have happened without dedicated volunteers!
Thank you also to the Brunswick Middle School (BMS) administration, teaching staff and custodial staff. We could not accomplish what we do as the Parent Teacher Organization without the strong support of the entire BMS staff.
Congratulations to the PTO Officers for the 2016-2017 school year:
· Katharina Connor – Vice President
· Chris Christman – Vice President
· Gail Fitzgerald – Treasurer
· Cheryl Church – Secretary
