SMMS STAFF NOTES

WEEK OF 7 DECEMBER 2015

MISSION DRIVEN

In an essay on the Five Essential Marks of Catholic Schools (see the link below), ARCHBISHOP J. MICHAEL MILLER, C.S.B writes about the fifth mark, Sustained by Gospel Witness, commenting:

A final indicator of a school's authentic catholicity is the vital witness of its teachers and administrators. With them lies the primary responsibility for creating a Christian school climate, as individuals and as a community. Indeed, "it depends chiefly on them whether the Catholic school achieves its purpose." Consequently the Holy See's documents pay a great deal of attention to the vocation of teachers and their participation in the Church's evangelizing mission. Theirs is a supernatural calling and not simply the exercise of a profession. "The nobility of the task to which teachers are called demands that, in imitation of Christ, the only Teacher, they reveal the Christian message not only by word but also by every gesture of their behavior."

I know that not every gesture of my behavior reveals the Christian message. I assume I am not unique in this regard, so how can each of us at SMMS better approximate this ideal? How can we help each other do that?

JUSTICE

Are you explicitly incorporating it every single week in your lesson plans? You should be, as with all our vital values when they have their respective months.

GROWTH MINDSET

The article I put in the Weekly Witness was really good. It clarifies some common misunderstandings about it. Growth Mindset is a critical part of our school culture. You must be well versed in it and put it into practice every day. Therefore, I've put the piece in the Staff Notes as well. See below.

The Font To Use!

I would describe myself as irrationally attached to Times New Roman. That all changed when Ms. Clemens made me aware of a certain font, Garamond. It is aesthetically, economically, and environmentally pleasing. Check out the cool piece about it below. I ASK ALL OF YOU TO USE THIS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE STARTING MONDAY. BEGINNING JANUARY 2016, IT WILL BE REQUIRED. IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO CHANGE FONT OR HOW TO ENSURE THAT YOU ARE USING THIS SPECIFIC FONT, PLEASE SEE MS. CLEMENS OR ME.
