Conversations about School
"Let's see what you brought home."
Look at completed work to find out what your child is learning and how well she is doing. You could comment on her math work or social studies project.
"Show me what you have for homework."
It's your child's job to do her homework, but you play a role, too. Make sure he knows what he's supposed to do by having her explain the assignments to you. After he finishes his homework, glance over the work to see that it's complete. If he reports that he doesn't have homework for several days, be suspicious and reach out to the teacher.
"Describe a book you enjoyed today."
This gives you an idea of what your child prefers to read. Then, build a daily reading habit by asking what she'd like to read tonight. Encourage her reading and listening skills by reading aloud to her and letting her read to you.
"Tell me what you learned that you'd like to know more about."
Use his interests as a jumping-off points for activities to share.
Counselor's Corner
The Viking character trait for the month of March is trustworthiness. Here is an article which supports our monthly class guidance lesson. We talk about trust being like a building. We add or remove the building blocks or trust through our actions. Ex. Following house rules in completing homework adds to trust. But, lying about whether or not the student has homework removes a brick of trust. Thank you for partnering with us to grow/strengthen character traits.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS
The vast majority of our students with excessive absences fail to pass their classes. Students need to be at school everyday.
Our school-wide attendance goal for this year is 98%. Our state funding is based on the percentage of students at school at 10:15 am every day. Higher attendance rate = more money for resources for your student.
For students who miss school, here is some very important attendance information:
- 3 or more unexcused absences in a 4 week period - warning letter sent home, phone conference with at-risk coordinator and attendance improvement plan.
- 5 or more unexcused absences in a 6-week period - warning letter sent home, phone conference with administrator, attendance behavior plan reviewed.
- 7 or more unexcused absences in an 8-week period - warning letter sent home and Behavior Intervention Plan meeting called with the parents, student, and assistant principal.
- 10 or more unexcused absences in a 6 month period - truancy charges are filed. Parent, student and school administrator will be summoned to appear in truancy court.
There is also a 90% attendance law that states that students have to attend 90% of their classes in a year to receive credit and be promoted to the next grade. You can't miss more that 9 days in a semester or more that 17 days for the year.
Our campus goal is to reach 98% attendance each day.
Thanks for your support!
