From the Nurse:

For all Current 6th grade Students:

  • The Texas Department of Public Health requires that all students entering 7th grade receive both a Meningococcal/meningitis vaccine (MCV4) and a Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis/whooping cough) booster before school starts this fall. All students going into the 7th grade must have proof of having the Tdap and Meningococcal vaccines or apply for a conscientious exemption form through the state. Your child may have already received the vaccines and simply needs to provide proof to the school nurse. To find out if your child has these immunizations you can call your healthcare provider or locate the paperwork from their latest pediatrician’s appointment. There will be no grace/extension period for the implementation of this requirement. By law, if your 7th grader is not fully immunized for meningitis and Tdap, he or she will not be allowed on campus until proof has been provided.

Recovering from the Winter Storm:

After missing the entire week, I know there are many questions regarding grades, possible extensions to the 9 weeks, etc. I want to assure you that your child's teachers are making the necessary adjustments to ensure students receive the instruction missed last week. Some grades that would have been completed in the 3rd nine weeks may be shifted to the 4th, but the content will be covered. Any district wide adjustments or changes will come from LISD directly.

The interference of the bad weather days has put a bit of a "crunch" between the end of the second progress report and the end of the 9 weeks. In order to help your student be successful, we will be having our Academic Camp Tutorials Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. If your student is failing any classes or has missing work, please make sure he/she attends these tutorials to help remediate his/her grades in time for report cards.

From the Nurse:

Hello Griffin Family!

Due to the bad weather days, we have rescheduled spinal screenings to Tuesday and Wednesday March 2nd and 3rd, we will be performing mandatory scoliosis screenings on 7th grade girls and 8th grade boys. This state mandated screening requires students to remove their shirts, so please ensure your children wear appropriate undergarments. If you choose to not have your child participate here at school, you may send in a physical form from your child’s pediatrician or a religious exemption note. These screenings will take place during PE and/or athletics. Virtual and virtual plus students are encouraged to come participate as well as screenings are required for all students regardless of learning track. Any VIRTUAL students who plan to come please reach out to Nurse Prill at peguesH@lisd.net to schedule a time to also complete their hearing and vision screening for the year on the same day.

POSSIBLE WEATHER DAYS NEXT WEEK:

You should have received notification from the district regarding preparations being made in the event that the weather prevents us from coming to campus next week. I have provided a short summary below as a reminder:

Monday - NO SCHOOL - Holiday

Tuesday - IF THE WEATHER KEEPS US HOME - this will be a "bad weather day" and no school will take place

Wednesday - Friday - IF THE WEATHER KEEPS US HOME - we will hold all in person learning "remotely," using WebEx meetings and CANVAS. Students will need to join their teacher's Webex meeting as well as complete work provided in CANVAS. This will not only keep students grades up, but also account for attendance while we are not on campus. Virtual students will continue as usual with their virtual teachers.

All students were reminded to take home any instruments and equipment they may need for next week, as well as given the opportunity to check out technology if they do not already have it. However, if for any reason your child is not able to access the internet, and therefore, their classes, please email or call his/her teachers.

Be on the look out for more information from the district, and have students check their SCHOOL email for information from individual teachers!

Update to Dress Code:

Last week I mentioned that we were seeing some issues with dress code, and one of the concerns mentioned were shoes. Mr. Jennings has provided some updated information to students today. Please see his letter below:

Dear Griffin Family,

I made a mistake…. Last week, I announced a couple of dress code issues that we have seen on campus. While the announcement and teacher enforcement worked, I was incorrect in regards to shoes allowed on campus.

The district dress code currently reads:

"For Health reasons, students are required to wear shoes appropriate for the school setting. House shoes or slippers are not appropriate for school. Flip flops are not appropriate for elementary students."

Since flip flops (slides) are not listed for middle school and high school students, they are considered appropriate to wear on campus. House shoes are not appropriate on our campus. The difference between house shoes and flip flops will be determined by the sole's thickness on our campus. Meaning if a student is wearing a flip flop, but it has glitter, bows, and other decorations on it will still be considered a flip flop and appropriate to wear. As always, if there are any questions, our admin staff can make that determination.

I am a firm believer that when you make a mistake, you own up to it. It is a conversation I have with students in my office consistently. For that reason, I came on the announcements today to explain the mistake and precisely what they can wear.

Mr. Jennings

In 2018, students from all five Lewisville ISD high schools – Flower Mound, Hebron, Lewisville, Marcus and The Colony – were determined to make kindness normal. That's where it all began. Today, #LISDBeKind continues to play an important role in the district.

For the 2020-21 school year, the @LISDBeKind initiative will be a district-wide, collaborative effort. The annual Kindness Week will be held Feb. 8-12, 2021, and this year, each LISD campus will have a student Kindness Ambassador and staff Kindness Liaison.

New Orchestra Teacher:

Please help us welcome Mr. Kennith "Trey" Thompson to the Griffin Staff! Mr. Thompson will join our staff as our new orchestra teacher. Mr. LaRocque did a fantastic job as our long term substitute in the fall while we were searching for just the right teacher, and we are so grateful for his service. Mr. Thompson is coming to us with a wealth of experience working with many great musicians. He is excited to get to know our students and parents, and begin building our orchestra program. If you have a student in orchestra, be on the lookout for emails from Mr. Thompson!

Semester Exam Make up:

If your student missed one or more semester exams for any reason, he/she will have the opportunity to take them this week. The teacher of the class missing the exam will coordinate a day/time for the make up exam. This includes both virtual and in person classes. Please check with your student to ensure they are prepared for these exams if they are one who needs to make it up.

Schedules:

In a year where nothing is "normal" or predictable, student schedules are no exception. In past years, the beginning of the school year is marked by a week or two of schedule changes while we balance classes, work through schedule change requests, etc. After that, student classes and schedules remain fairly consistent. Unfortunately, this year looks much different. Because we provide you the opportunity to move learning pathways each 9 weeks, and we have been more flexible with student requests to change classes, we must completely rework our master schedule every 9 weeks. We have teachers who are moving back and forth between virtual classes and in person classes, and students schedules must be changed to accommodate these movements and keep classes balanced. Please know that we understand how incredibly stressful this is on you, your students, and the teachers. However, as long as we are allowing changes each 9 weeks, we will continue to have these changes. Thank you for your understanding as we navigate this year.

Ipad Information:

If your student has an ipad that has been turned off, it is because their ipad fee was never paid. LISD extended the cutoff from the end of the 1st 9 weeks to the end of the first semester for families to have time to take care of these fees. However, at this time, students who have not paid will have to turn in their ipad. As you can imagine, being without technology will be very difficult with how most classes are managed this year. If your student has been affected by this, please reach out to our assistant principal, Gerrod Cleburn, for a plan to get this rectified. He can be reached at cleburng@lisd.net.

Grades:

Grades were posted last Thursday and report cards will be out at the end of this week. As a reminder of our our grading system works, the first and second 9 weeks grade, along with the semester exam, are averaged together to get the first semester exam grade. The same process will work for the 3rd and 4th 9 week grade and final exam in the spring. These two semester exam grades will then be averaged together to get the final grade for the year. Students must have a 70 or better FINAL average to pass the class for the year.

When you receive your student's report card, look at the semester 1 grade. This will tell you what grade your student will need to maintain in the spring semester in order to ensure he/she passes for the year. For example, if a student has a 64 semester average in math, he she must maintain a 76 or better average in the spring in order to end the year with a 70.

If your student is struggling to keep passing grades, and he/she is in the virtual pathway, it is imperative that you work with him/her to make a plan to ensure grades are improved. Teachers cannot intervene when students are not making progress with virtual students unless the student reaches out and asks/accepts the assistance.

Thank you for partnering with us at GMS to walk this journey together!
