Be Safe, Be Kind, Be Responsible

Principal's Message

Dear Families,

What a thrilling and incredible first week of school. Your hard work on teaching mask wearing and physical distancing this summer is evident and appreciated. All day mask wearing was seamless. Thank you for your patience as we embark on hybrid learning, be sure to reach out to classroom teachers with questions.

We hope you can join us Tuesday September 15th at 7:00 pm for a Zoom session with Dr. Joelle Van Lent on helping your child build resiliency and cope with feelings. We will send the Zoom link by email today. Dr. Joelle Van Lent provides practical and useful tips you can use to support your child. Please join Principal Suzanne Gruendling and School Counselor Ashley Cate as we facilitate this conversation with Dr. Van Lent.

Looking forward to another great week.

A Message from Mrs. Cate - Welcome Back!

I am so excited to see all of you! I hope you enjoyed your summer in this beautiful state of Vermont! I sure did. I spent a lot of time with my new puppy Frankie and my family. We went swimming, camping, and took a lot of walks in the neighborhood. We also moved to Essex! I am so happy to be living in the community where my favorite people are.

The counseling program may look a little different this year, but I will be available to all students and families as usual, both remotely and in-person here at Summit.

Wellness Classes: I will be teaming up with the wonderful music and PE teachers, Mrs. Valastro and Mrs. Hutton to teach Wellness every other week. This will be a time where we can talk about big feelings, ways to cope with them, and tell our stories. We will incorporate the “Zones of Regulation” which is a research-based curriculum that teaches students about managing emotions. We will also let the “Social Emotional Learning” (SEL) standards guide our lessons. For the month of September we will be focusing on the competency “Self Awareness” by learning about feelings/emotions.

Individual Check-Ins – Throughout the year you may wish for you and/or your child to check in with a school counselor. I will always try and make time to work individually with your child and make appropriate referrals if necessary. Your child’s teacher may also come to me if there are any concerns. We have a great team of support at Summit to help your families with any challenges that come along. I will be available for parents/guardians through zoom, Facetime, phone, or in person outside the building. If you feel your family is in crisis, First Call is a great resource to help 24 hours a day – 802-488-7777.

Small Groups – I know in the past I have sent out small group requests, but I will have to put those on hold for a while so that I can be available to help students and family’s transition to this different way of learning.

I am looking forward to a great year! –Ashley Cate, School Counselor 878-1377 ext. 7939

We are so excited to welcome back our students!!
