Welborne Word
September 26, 2023, Issue #5
Dear Families,
Welcome to Week #4!
Thank you so much for joining us at Welborne's Open House! It was great to see so many families following their talented student "tour guides" around the school. Many took the time to meet our Core French teachers, Planning Time teachers, and visit the library and gym! Thank you for your support! We want to extend a thank you to the School Council representatives who were also at our Open House to greet families and share information about the Welborne School Council. If you would like more information about how you can join the school council, please reach out to one of our Council Co-chairs:

Congratulations to our FIVE soccer teams who entered into tournaments last week. A huge thank you to our coaches and families for supporting our young athletes!
This year's Terry Fox Walk will be held this week - Thursday afternoon! This year's theme is "Dear Terry". Our school goal is to raise $5000 for the Terry Fox Foundation. Pledge/Fundraising sheets have been sent home with students. Families may also send in a Toonie for Terry instead of fundraising. We are talking about Terry Fox and this event at school to help raise awareness and share Terry's message of hope and inspiration. https://terryfox.org/
This Friday is Orange Shirt Day across LDSB schools since the official day falls on a Saturday this year. We encourage all students to wear orange if they are able to on Friday to commemorate the residential school experience and honour the healing journey of the survivors and their families. On this day, everyone is encouraged to learn more about the history of residential schools and engage in meaningful discussions about the effects of residential schools and the legacy they have left behind.
Finally, this week is Safety Week at Welborne. We will be practicing 3 fire drills (weather permitting) and a lockdown drill. We will be having age-appropriate conversations about these drills with students before we practice. This is a requirement of all schools.
If you have any questions, please email us at welba@limestone.on.ca.
Warm regards,
Ms. Fraser, Mrs. Wellwood, and Mrs. Hart

Beyond Orange Shirt Day - Truth and Reconciliation Every Day
Beyond September 30th, we need to recognize the importance of Truth and Reconciliation in all that we do. As educators bringing in Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing and honouring Indigenous knowledge systems and contributions to society should be embedded in the curriculum, all year round.
Read books about the residential school experience.
Volunteer with Indigenous organizations and not-for-profits.
Support Indigenous artists.
Watch Indigenous films and documentaries.
Attend Indigenous events that are open to the public in your community.
Learning greetings in the Indigenous language(s) of your community.
Listen to Indigenous podcasts and music.
Learn the true history of what is now known as Canada.
Work towards meaningful allyship.
Donate to Indigenous communities, causes, etc.
