Get to Know the Adolescent You Love and Teach
Taken from the American Montessori Society: Characteristics of a Secondary Montessori Program
Adolescents experience a period of tremendous physical growth, the onset of puberty, and boundless energy.
Typically, adolescents experience self-awareness and self-criticism, emotional ups and downs, uncertainty, vulnerability (self-doubt and hesitation), argumentativeness, and egocentrism.
Socially, they seek solidarity with peers. However, they can be critical of those peers and of adults. Concurrently, they crave greater independence. They are concerned with human welfare and dignity, and are often morally and ethically minded.
Adolescents exhibit novelty-seeking and risk-taking behaviors and seek intensity and excitement as a result of their under-developed pre-frontal lobe (which controls impulses and emotions). They exhibit an increased desire for autonomy, an increased interest in “groupthink”, and susceptibility to peer pressure. Adolescents benefit from positive bonds with nonparental adults they can trust.
Cognitively, adolescents are critical thinkers who question why, are creative, have a greater ability to reason, and are capable of mature thought if framed in a personal context.
Tigers Sharing the Warmth for Those in Need (Nov. 29 - Dec 10, 2021)
We are collecting NEW socks, T-shirts, hats, gloves, sweat shirts, blankets, or any other NEW warm weather items.
Donations will be collected in the main office or in your child's homeroom class. By December 10, 2021, parents can bring donations to the main office or send them to school with their child.

A Glimpse at the Magnet Schools of Richland One - Annual Magnet Fair
Parents will receive information about magnet programs from school and district staff, and they will be able to ask questions during the fair, which will be conducted online via Microsoft Teams.
At the elementary school level, Richland One’s magnet programs include career awareness, Montessori and language immersion, as well as pre-kindergarten. Magnet programs for middle school students include career exploration, medical, and Montessori. At the high school level, the district offers career preparation and health sciences magnet programs, along with the Richland Middle College and Virtual School Programs.
Richland One students are assigned to schools according to where they live and may apply to enroll in a magnet program within the district through the choice program. All students who live in Richland One’s attendance zone are eligible for admission to magnet programs, unless the program is designated as one that is zoned for a specific attendance area. Admission is based on successful completion of the application process, which may include attending an information session.
Parents are asked to register online at https://forms.office.com/r/y73kVET6Ky. To learn more about Richland One’s magnet programs, go to the Richland One Magnet Programs page on the district’s website at www.richlandone.org/choice.
Know the End in Mind
What are the school-wide Sanders Goals for 2021-2022
2. To have less than 9.2% of our students exhibit poor attendance resulting in truancy
3. To reduce by 2% the number of students receiving an out of school suspension
Some key strategies
-Offer on-grade level teaching in the classroom and daily interventions during the school day.
-Offering more leadership opportunities and club opportunities.
-Giving students more of a voice in how they learn
