Ice Tsunami
Ice tsunamis have occurred in Minnesota and Canada. Ice tsunamis or Ice Shoves are caused by ocean currents, strong winds, and temperature differences that push ice onto the shore. They usually happen in winter or right after winter when a lake or ocean is in the process of thawing. Ice shoves happen in Minnesota and Canada because they have colder temperatures and large lakes.
Damage caused by Ice Tsunamis
Ice tsunamis are very powerful and can cause a lot of damage to buildings. They "shove" their way onto shore and push with a lot of force. They can knock down a house or building. Ice shoves can create piles of ice up to 40 feet high.
When do Ice tsunamis happen?
Ice tsunamis often happen in Minnesota because of all the large lakes. These happen in a certain order of steps first ice has to be floating on the surface of a large body of water that is thawing and then the wind has to be strong enough to cause the ice to be blown onto shore.
