Balclutha Primary School - T2 Wk 6
Newsletter 11 June 2021
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia Ora e te Whānau,
Welcome to Week 6. I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend as much as I did.
This week was Support Staff Week, and it is an opportunity for us to acknowledge and celebrate the amazing job our support staff do.
Balclutha Primary School has many wonderful strengths and assets, but I believe the biggest and most effective strength of our school is our wonderful staff. At Balclutha Primary School we are fortunate to have 9 teacher aides, 1 bilingual support worker, 1 office administrator, a cleaner and a caretaker. This wonderful team go above and beyond everyday to ensure our students have the best learning opportunities we can provide, and our teaching team have the support they need to run great teaching and learning programmes. Our support staff are wonderful and a very important part of our school. A huge thank you to them for everything they do.
Ngā mihi nui,
Vicki.
Save the date
A reminder that school will be closed for instruction on Friday 25 June as staff will be having a Teacher Only Day.
Have a great weekend,
Ngā mihi nui,

Playground Surface
The BOT have confirmed a supplier and submitted their application to the Ministry to use our grant of $110K for upgrading the existing 2 larger playground areas with turf, and removing the current bark chips. As expected, the quote for the works is slightly above our allocated grant from the Ministry of Education, and we are delighted that Whānau and School will also contribute $7k towards the project. Money from the recent Cheeseroll fundraiser will be used towards this turf project.
So, a big thank you to everyone who in someway contributed to this fundraiser, whether it was by selling, making or buying any of the 22,000 cheese rolls!
Last week the Room 12 and year 6 children went on their camp to Mount Cook! It looked like a fantastic adventure and it was great to see all the photos and videos on the school facebook page and see what they experienced. Education Outside the Classroom provides children with life changing experiences that they will remember for the rest of their lives! The BOT’s role is to ensure that these experiences do not put anyone at risk. A huge part of the planning and preparation is done by the teachers as they are required to submit to the BOT, a Risk Assessment Management plan for all the activities that the children will participate in when on overnight camps. This includes a risk assessment for activities such as; transport to and from the camp, activities on the camp and emergency readiness. You can find out more about this process on the SchoolDocs website for Balclutha School.
One of the strategic goals for the BOT is to increase communication with the wider school community. Thanks to Vicki and her team for the improvements for this year, such as; the regular BPS facebook posts, teachers using the one app to share classroom experiences via Seesaw, more communication on the School App, a fantastic newly formatted newsletter and of course the new and updated school website that has just been launched! Be sure to check it out!
Thanks

Save the Date! 11th - 14th of September - Cardrona Ski Trip
We are excited to be offering a ski trip for our school families again this year. So, save the date!
Our ski trip will be from the 11th to the 14th of September. You can choose to attend as many of these days as you wish. We organise the skiing but not the accommodation or travel to Wanaka. We can, however help with getting some families up and down the mountain.
We will provide more information towards the end of the term. Please let us know numbers and ages of possible participants and the dates you intend to come.
Email katie@balclutha.school.nz or contact the school office (4190103 or admin@balclutha.school.nz ) with this information if you are interested in joining us.

Parking outside School
We have two disabled parking bays on the road outside our school entrance on Lanark Street.
A wee reminder to all families, only those vehicles with a valid parking permit can use our disabled bays at all times. This includes before school, after school and during school hours. Many thanks.
Room 1 looked at a poem called Five Green and Speckled Frogs with Mrs Craig. They made gorgeous paper plate frogs!
Room 2
Over the past few weeks, Room 2 has been reading and talking about poems that look at each of the vowels. This week we did our last vowel - u - and designed colourful umbrellas which we cut out and stuck into our poetry books.
