The J-Hawk Experience!
Info you need to know for week of October 14-18!
Message from the principal
As we recognize October as national College Application Month, we continue to highlight a few of our UHS graduates who are out doing different kinds of work/learning and share about the pathways that took them where they are around Iowa and around the world.
This week, we highlight UHS Class of 2019 graduate, Cole Janssen. He is currently in his freshman year at Loyola University Chicago. Cole shares the following about life after UHS:
"I'm currently planning on double majoring in Sports Management and something related to Statistics or Analytics. My dream is to one day work in the front office of a professional sports team. I would love to work with various metrics behind the games to make the best decisions for a franchise. I've always had a passion for sports and look forward to finding a career that allows me to spend time around them every day." As a senior at UHS, Cole was also one of two National Merit Semifinalists. He's now out pursuing his dream.
I'd like to announce that this year UHS senior, Reese Dial, has been named as a Semifinalist in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program and has the opportunity to continue in the National Merit Scholarship Competition with finalists being selected in February of 2020. She is among the top 16,000 students of the 1.6 million students in the country who took the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Reese is pictured below.
Current UHS students interested in taking the 2019 PSAT test in an attempt for the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program should sign up in the UHS counseling office by Tuesday, October 15th.
Thank you also to UHS teachers and staff who have supported Reese (and others) and helped bring learning to life for her...and for all! Congratulations to her for her hard work thus far in achieving this great recognition and best wishes to Reese as she attempts to become a finalist!
Sincerely,
Tim Carver
Principal

UHS Construction UPDATE
Vaping-related Illness Cases Rise in Iowa
Author: Polly Carver-Kimm/Friday, September 27, 2019/Categories: Behavioral Health
Cases of severe respiratory illness associated with vaping continue to be reported across the U.S. and in Iowa. Nationwide, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported 805 cases and 12 deaths. In Iowa, there have been 23 reported cases and no deaths. Of the 23 Iowa cases, ages range from 17 to 60 and 18 have reported the use of THC. Mirroring national statistics, most of the cases (78%) have been male. All Iowa cases have recovered.
Nationally, most cases have reported the use of vaping and e-cigarette products containing THC; however, vaping products and devices that do not contain THC have also been reported among affected states. Case numbers will likely continue to increase as this investigation continues.
Iowans should not use vaping and e-cigarette products since the cause of this outbreak is not yet clear and the long-term health impacts of these products are unknown. Patients with a history of vaping who are experiencing breathing problems should seek medical care. Health care providers should ask patients with respiratory illness about the use of vaping and e-cigarette products. Health care providers are asked to report severe respiratory illness in patients with a history of vaping or e-cigarette use to the Iowa Department of Public Health (1-800-362-2736).
To learn more, visit https://idph.iowa.gov/ehi/lung-disease-vaping. Weekly Iowa case counts may also be found on this page.
Parking lot safety
To help provide a safer parking lot experience at UHS, I wanted to remind students, families, and staff, about a few parking lot items to be sure everyone takes care of each other:
1. There is to be no student parking at any time in the East Lot next to the stadium.
2. The universal speed limit in a parking lot is 5 mph.
3. Students crossing any streets and parking lots are reminded to use designated crosswalks.
4. New this year, speed bumps have been added in the parking lot by the baseball field to remind drivers to slow speeds at all times.
WHEN PARKING IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD, remember to park legally. This includes following all parking signs and NOT parking in front of mailboxes. Thank you!

A note from Silver Cord Committe to UHS students
Welcome back to school! From the stack of hours turned in during schedule pickup and Open House, we can tell many of you did a TON of volunteer work this summer, and you invited your friends. The senior class has volunteered almost 11,000 hours during high school, and the freshmen are off to a great start with 654 hours this summer. Way to go!
Hours were updated last week -- check them here: Silver Cord Ladder If you have 40 or more hours, go see Mrs. Strong in Room 212 to pick up a free Silver Cord Volunteer t-shirt!
Do you love working with younger kids? We have lots of fun opportunities coming up, including Urbandale Team J-Hawk Football and Girls On The Run, where you can work with and inspire elementary age students. You can always find opportunities and current information at our Silver Cord information page. We try to put the current events at the top, with ongoing volunteer opportunities towards the bottom. This year, try setting up a weekly volunteering job, and see how fast your hours add up! Just read about each opportunity, choose something and sign up, and show up with an Hours Verification Form (attached). When you're done volunteering, have the adult in charge sign your form and turn your form in at the UHS Main Office. It's easy!
Remember, this is the only Silver Cord email address that is checked on a regular basis. Please send hours and questions to us!
Please turn in your summer volunteer hours to the UHS Main Office as soon as possible so we can get them added, and keep on doing good!
