New Marking Period, New You πŸ‘πŸ˜

Marking Period 1 has come and gone! It has been a new experience for all of us, but we are navigating these new waters together and we made it through. We step away from Fiction for marking period 2. Our main focus will be reading Informational Text and writing an Argumentative Researched Based Essay.


Students completed a reflection for marking period 1 where they thought about their efforts academically and behaviorally. Students reflected on their class experience and determined goals for marking period 2. I encourage parents & guardians to review this assignment in Google Classroom and discuss with you student.

Reading

When we read information text, students will be able to:


  • Use a variety of active reading strategies such as highlighting and/or underlining essential

  • information, making annotations, paraphrasing, and taking notes to help them process and understand a text

  • Articulate the purposes of research papers and presentations

  • Employ appropriate formatting for a research paper

  • Define, identify, and evaluate the effectiveness of poetic structures and forms (e.g. stanzas, sonnets, etc.)

  • Use reading strategies such as questioning, making inferences, and evaluating to understand the purpose and evaluate the validity of a research paper and/or presentation

  • Engage in research by asking meaningful questions, engaging in inquiry, investigating reliable sources, making connections, and reflecting on new information

  • Select reliable sources for research by evaluating their validity and reliability

  • Summarize, paraphrase, and quote sources

  • Cite sources using MLA-style citations

  • Include multimedia components and visual displays to enhance a presentation

  • Adapt speech to a variety of contexts

  • Cite textual evidence and make connections to support analysis.

  • Determine theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development.

  • Provide an objective summary of the text.

  • Determine the meaning of words and phrases.

  • Determine two or more central ideas in a text and analyze their development.

  • Analyze the interactions between individuals, events, and ideas in a text.

  • Analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone.

  • Analyze the structure an author uses to organize a text.

  • Determine an author’s point of view or purpose.

  • Identify informational and argument techniques within a text and the goals of each of them.

Writing

In this unit, students will study a variety of nonfiction texts in order to write research based argumentative essays. In writing, students will read articles on the topic of their choice in order to write a position paper. The following are key 7th grade standards students will focus on:

  1. Introduce a topic clearly, previewing what is to follow; organize ideas, concepts, and information, using text structures (e.g., definition, classification, comparison/contrast, cause/effect, etc.) and text features (e.g., headings, graphics, and multimedia).

  2. Develop the topic with relevant facts, definitions, concrete details, quotations, or other information and examples.

  3. Use appropriate transitions to create cohesion and clarify the relationships among ideas and concepts.

  4. Use precise language and domain-specific vocabulary to inform about or explain the topic.

  5. Establish and maintain a formal style academic style, approach, and form.

  6. Provide a concluding statement or section that follows from and supports the information or explanation presented.

  7. Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.
