3rd Grade Math
Topic 2- Multiplication Facts: Use Patterns
Patterns in Multiplication Facts: Multiply by 0, 1, 2, 5, 9, and 10. The focus is on strategies and reasoning.
Multiplication Properties: Multiplicative Identity and Zero Properties- Writing the repeated addition as multiplication gives n x 0=0
Equal Groups: Situations Involving Equal Groups- Students use the equal-groups meaning of multiplication to solve problems involving real-world contexts.
Topic 3- Apply Properties: Multiplication Facts for 3, 4, 6, 7, 8
Equal Groups: Multiplication facts are presented within the context of equal groups.
3 ACT Math: Thirsty Students
Video: A teacher is handing out bottles of water and juice boxes on a field trip. We see approximately how many of each type are left.
Main Question: How many bottles of water did the students drink?
4th Grade Math
Topic 2: Fluently Add and Subtract Multi-Digit Whole Numbers
Students focus on developing fluency with the standard algorithms for addition and subtraction.
Find Sums and DifferencesUse Mental Math to Add and Subtract: Students use the strategies of breaking about, making ten, adding on, counting up, counting back, and compensation.
Estimate Sums and Differences: Students use rounding to estimate sums and differences.
Use Properties: Students use properties of addition.
Topic 3: Use Strategies and Properties to Multiply by 1-Digit Numbers
Distributive Property: Students apply the Distributive Property throughout the topic as they use partial products to find the product of a 1-digit number and a multi-digit number.
3 ACT Math: Covered Up
Video: A boy is covering the sides of a box with square stickers.
Main Question: How many stickers do you need to cover a box?
5th Grade Math
Topic 2: Use Models and Strategies to Add and Subtract Decimals
Develop Number Sense:
Use Mental Math to Add and Subtract Decimals- Students learn to use properties of addition to rearrange addends so they are easier to add mentally.
Estimate Sums and Differences- Students estimate decimal sums and differences using rounding and compatible numbers.
Add and Subtract Decimals:
Add Decimals- Students use models to develop understanding of addition of decimals.
Topic 3: Fluently Multiply Multi-Digit Whole Numbers
Multiply by 1-Digit Numbers: Use the standard algorithm for multiplication using the partial products strategy.
Multiply by 2-Digit Numbers: Students extend the standard multiplication algorithm and use the partial-products strategy.
3 ACT Math: Morning Commute
Video: The video shows a passenger train driving by. The train moves too fast to count the number of cars.
Main Question: How many seats are on the train?
