From the Principal’s Desk

Good evening Generals:

As we have seen in the past few weeks, we have had a handful of students make some poor decisions based on these TikTok Challenges. Reflect on the first weeks of school and how beautiful things were going. We know that our kids can follow our expectations because we have parents that taught them well. Parents, it is time for some reminders about being their best and Modeling Excellence Every Day. Not only have we increased our population from about 50% to 100% of the student body back in person, but we are now also dealing with some social-emotional issues that are surfacing. These are manifesting as disrespect, poor peer relations, apathy, and impulsivity.

Please take the time at home to talk with your child (routinely) to check in and see what’s going on at school, who their friends are, what’s happening on social media (TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, etc.), but especially, what they are learning.

  1. Let them know they have TRUSTED ADULTS in the building (e.g., their homeroom teacher). Let them know there are other trusted adults in the building if they connect with someone else.
  2. Let them know that you are here for them to converse. If they are having issues with peer relations, talk to them about ways to handle these issues that are peaceful.
  3. Tell them to report anything to you of which they are concerned.
  4. Let them know that social media is not an authentic form of communication.
  5. Review your family rules and expectations that you have established and let them know WHY you have them.
  6. Remind them that they should find a best friend at school.
  7. Remind them to join a club(s) to help fill voids or times of loneliness.
  8. Remind them that our phenomenal Counselors are doing a Trusted Adult Campaign to continue getting the word out.

One of the main concerns is restrooms (this was the TikTok Challenge for the month of August). Please review your expectations for how to behave in the restroom, especially their interactions with other students and recording incidents that are occurring. Please remind them that recording students, videoing, texting, and making phone calls during school hours is unacceptable and they will receive a consequence. Remind them they are not to leave class during the first 10 minutes or the last 10 minutes of class unless it is an emergency. EMPOWER your child to be as great as you!

We have some great ROLE models in this building as well as in the community. We are all allies in promoting positive behavior, so help us recognize them.

We welcome your input and ideas to get all of our students back on track to success! It is going to take all of us working together. Remember, “it takes a village to raise a child.”

As a parent, you have the hardest JOB on this earth, and you are doing it at one of the most difficult times. You pour your heart and soul into your child’s wellbeing, and it shows every day. We will keep our heads up and not give up. We will work together and help our kids get through this. We must equip them with the tools to do the right thing. We are diligently working to address issues, meet with parents, and institute necessary social emotional procedures to help support every child.

These times are truly testing the "it takes a village" concept, but I know our village is STRONG because we are Shiloh...Shiloh Generals…Shiloh STRONG!

Let's stay in communication and stay united.

Kind regards,

Dr. Shantí Howard
