A message from the Principal-Mrs. Bookman
To our Suffield Families:
We wanted to make sure that families are clear on quarantining. If your child was quarantined from school due to close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID, this means that your child is supposed to stay home, not go out in public, and keep away from those outside your family until the quarantine period is up. The period of quarantine is for 10 days from the date of exposure. If you have questions on when your child's quarantine is up, we can clarify that for you. If your child develops symptoms while in quarantine, we need to know that at school. Most likely the Portage County Health Department will be contacting you to go over this. I know that they are backed up with cases, so in case they don't, please be sure to keep your child in quarantine. Symptoms can develop at any time while quarantined. A negative test does not indicate that your child does not have to continue to quarantine. A negative one day can be a positive if tested the next or any time during that quarantine period. I had to quarantine myself, so I know how inconvenient it is! However, quarantining is necessary to stop the spread.
Next week we will end 2020 with a fun week. Here are some fun things to make it happen:
- Monday-Ugly or Holiday Sweater/Shirt Day
- Tuesday-Grinch Day-Wear Green
- Wednesday-Santa Day-Wear Red or a Santa Hat
- Thursday-Polar Express Day-Wear PJs
- Friday-Elf Yourself Day-Dress as an elf or wear any holiday attire, red, green
Have a good weekend,
Mrs. Bookman
Zoom Clarification for In-Person Learners
If your child has COVID symptoms or is exposed to someone at home with COVID symptoms, and cannot attend school, please notify the office immediately.
A student with COVID symptoms is not required to login to class to live stream if he or she is ill; however, you have the option of having your child live stream if you feel that your child is feeling well enough to be online. If they feel well enough and will be logging in, please let your child’s teacher know so that the teacher will let him/her into the Zoom session.
If your child is quarantining they are expected to be logging into all of the classroom Zoom sessions throughout the day. If your child is home on quarantine and cannot login for any reason, you should call your child off school like you would any other day. If you have any questions please let me know.
If your child is off of school for anything not “COVID” related, he/she will not be permitted to join a Zoom session.

Gifts to those in Need
For our annual Christmas project, we will be collecting donations for Safer Futures home in Portage County. This is a short term home for women and children of domestic violence. Often times the families are leaving a dangerous situation and have to leave the home very quickly without packing anything. Over the past few years, this organization has been so thankful for the donations that our students and families have made.
We are accepting donations of NEW items listed below :
- Toiletries (shampoo, soap, toothpaste, brushes, etc.)
- Small Blankets
- Pillows
- Toys
- PJ’s
- Socks
- Undies
- Books
- Mittens, gloves, hats
- Coloring books & crayons
- School supplies
Donations can be brought to school and placed in the foyer area. All items will be quarantined appropriately before giving them to Safer Futures. The collection ends December 21.

Habit 5 - Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood
Too often instead of really listening, we are busy forming our response in our mind. This habit is about not just hearing with our ears, but looking at body language with our eyes, and using our hearts as well. We listen to understand who that person is, how they feel about something, and how they view the world.

Wish List Links
Traditionally the PTA has hung paper stockings outside of the classrooms to give families a chance to see what items the teacher may need for the classroom. Since most of our conferences were virtual, here are our virtual wish lists!
ELF Yourself
To celebrate the holidays, all students and staff are invited to "Elf Yourself" on Friday, December 18th. Students are welcome to dress up as an "elf" or in the holiday colors of red and green to help make our day before break a fun one! Please make sure that any clothing worn can be worn all day, and will not impede your child's or another child's learning.
Suffield League Christmas with Santa
All are welcome, children 11 years and younger will get a special surprise. Due to the current situation, this year's event will be a drive-thru at the Suffield Township Fire Station.
Vehicles are requested to enter from State Route 43, between the Historical Society and Suffield Road Dept. building. Volunteers will assist in lining up rows of cars behind the Suffield Fire Station.
Cars will be ushered thru the station one at a time. Masks are required inside the Station during your visit with Santa.
We do expect longer lines early, so plan accordingly. Santa will stay after 7PM if cars are waiting.

Counselor's Corner
Hello Field Families!
Please remember to talk to your children about the coping skills they learned from our lesson last month! They can be very helpful with students who might be going through transition from in school to online as well as helpful for everyday stress. Practice some self care together at home and see what helpful things you can do together!
Please check out my website to sign up for coffee with the counselor and or to contact me for your child's needs! School Counselor's Corner

Crayola Colorcycle Program
Crayola and schools across North America have banded together to help kids understand the importance of their role in protecting the environment. Suffield Elementary will now take part in recycling markers that no longer work. It’s a super easy project to help our environment! You can send in any brand of markers, sharpies, dry erase, and highlighters. Once we collect the markers, they will be shipped to a facility that repurposes them so that they are kept out of the landfills.
