College Counseling Newsletter - April Edition
College Applications
Completing the college application in its entirety is no easy feat. Students have to create thoughtful and grammatically correct personal statements, concise yet detailed resumes, and repeatedly fill out demographic information. They persevered and have the acceptances to show for it!

Tips for Teachers
Each year, colleges are increasingly asking for completed and graded assignments from students. Colleges are including these graded assignments in their evaluation of each applicant for admission. College counselors are encouraging teachers of all subjects to be prepared to upload or forward student work with written comments and grades on the assignment. Historically, we have been able to use what's been uploaded to Canvas. Please feel free to continue to use this method as it makes it easier for students to log in and submit the work to colleges directly.
Finally, a special thank you to all teachers who have been encouraging to students during the Fall of 2017! They needed to hear your words of support. They tell us all the time how you reinforce the messages we give in college counseling. Cheers to you!

What's up, College Counseling?
As soon as all college applications are submitted, we start 2 major projects: Financial Aid Analyzation and 11th Grade College Preparation. Both projects involve numerous planning meetings to evaluate past KIPP DC data trends as well as factors that contribute to the successes of the 11th grade class. We compare financial aid award letters for students and families and students complete a 3-week long budgeting project to understand the complexity of college financial planning. We bombard junior advisories to impart our wisdom on the 11th grade students. They receive carefully crafted worksheets so that we can start to fill their Naviance accounts with colleges to research. Family meetings are scheduled for almost every day of the week to begin the college application process with parents and guardians (yes, for many juniors, it starts now if it hasn't already).
