Chapter 2: Establishing and Maintaining Collaborative Teams
"In the first chapter, we were rather loose in our use of terms like PLC, the PLC process, and collaborative teams. We felt that this was necessary because those researchers and practitioners who have written about the PLC concept have used these and related terms in various, idiosyncratic ways. To rectify this issue, we will define and use specific terms in specific ways from her on out. We'll use the term PLC process to represent all the policies and practices that lead a school to establish and maintain a network of collaborative teams whose work enhances the learning of students. We'll refer to a PLC as a school that consistently achieves this goal. Finally, the core of a PLC is the network of collaborative teams--the groups of teachers working together to improve student learning.
Schoolwide Norms
Collaborative teams, if they are to function effectively, must be linked by schoolwide norms. Norms are the broad descriptors of the behaviors in which all members of the schoolwide effort will engage. One important norm is that 'teachers and staff have formal ways to provide input regarding the optimal functioning of the school' (Marzano, Warrick, & Simms, 2014, p. 15). This norm has the dual benefit of increasing teacher buy-in and improving leaders' decision making. Some PLC proponents use the term itself to establish schoolwide norms by considering the meanings of the words professional, learning, and community. For example, a school unpacking the meaning of the term PLC might conclude that professional learning communities require staff to treat their work as a profession by utilizing research and outside knowledge and embracing improvement. Professional learning communities ask teachers to view themselves as learners and co-contributors to each other's learning. Professional learning communities operate with collaboration as their foundational commitment, expressly seeking to learn through collaboration and using dialogue to advance their capabilities for the benefit of students.
On the whole, the schoolwide norms that guide the PLC process are quite different from those that usually govern more traditional schools."
