A Magic Show!!!

Wednesday of this week, Mr. Levine (the husband of a retired teacher who helps our grade level) came to put on a magic show for our 2nd grade students! It was AMAZING! Ask your child what his/her favorite magic trick was!

Veteran's Day!

This week our class learned about Veteran's Day! We began our discussion about what a veteran is. We then discussed how we honor veterans. We discussed one way we honor veterans is with memorials! The students (in small groups) were challenged to design a memorial best suited for the city of Fishers! They needed to consider location, safety, cost, and longevity, and the memorial had to reflect veterans! Ask your child to share with you what their memorial looked like!

Happy World Kindness Day

Today was World Kindness Day! We practiced and brainstormed ways to be kind to each other, our school community, and the world. We decided to thank many staff members at our school like the custodian, counselor, and secretaries to name a few! We picked staff that might not always get enough love throughout the week. We also made a "Take what you need, Give what you can" poster. The idea behind this is, anyone walking by can take something that they need/something they can give to someone else. Students came up with some pretty powerful messages to write on this poster! I hope we fill many buckets throughout the next week or two! If you are going to Movie Night tonight, check it out! :)

Roving Reader Leaders!

Lisa Cohn (the author we skyped with last week) and her son, Michael, started a website to encourage reader leaders! This week we explored the website as a class, and listened to the book reviews that other kids have created! Ask your child what are some things that made a book review better than others!

Other exciting activities!

Decorating Gingerbread Houses!!!

We will be decorating gingerbread houses on Wednesday, December 16th from 11:00 to 11:45. A permission form and ingredient list will be sent home on soon! All parents are invited to attend! Please indicate on the permission form if you will be attending. We hope you will be able to join us for this fun event!

Icing Needed!

Each student will need their own container of white icing (any brand) to decorate their gingerbread house. You may send it in as you purchase it. Please write your child's name on the container. Thank you!

Upcoming Economics PBL opportunity!

Do you or a family member own or work at a small local business in our community? We are looking for a speaker to talk with 2nd graders about the importance of small businesses in our community! If this is something you are interested in, please let me know! Thanks in advance for your help with this project!

-Cotton balls

-Toilet paper

-Shoe boxes

Holiday gift idea!!!

During the past month, 2nd graders have had the opportunity to learn and practice skills through the use of OSMO! The 2nd grade team purchased 2 (with a 3rd on its way). If you have never heard of it, check out the link below. We have used it to help with fact fluency, to help with spelling, and for problem solving. It is an accessory that attaches to ipads. With the use of the ipads camera, it allows students to practices skills in a more engaging way! I am definitely looking into purchasing one for my own girls, so I thought I'd pass along the suggestion to you too! Visit www.playosmo.com for more info!

Math Talk

As we learn more and more math strategies and skills please remember to ask your child about them! When students talk about their learning it helps concretize the standards taught. Ask your child to walk you through the process they went through in order to find the answer! Remember...its more important students know the process to than to get the correct answer! Thanks for your help and support from home!

Mrs. Hopper is in need of donations for Makerspace in the Library! She will gladly take anything that you could use to make arts and crafts out of! Some examples would be: construction paper, markers, glue (liquid and stick), felt, duck tape, toilet paper tubes, scissors, tape, etc....basically anything that you could use to create things with your imagination!! Thanks so much for your help with this!!!

Lost Library Books!

Please make sure that you take an extra look around your house for LOST Library Books!! We know how easy it is for them to get mixed in with our own books, but we have some kiddos that are missing quite a few and not turning them in!! Don't forget to peek around your house for any that may be hiding!!!

Lost and Found

If your child is missing an item (coat, lunchbox, etc.), please remind him/her to check the lost and found table located in the cafeteria. Many lost items are piling up just waiting to be found! You may wish to label any items sent to school with your child’s name in order to make locating lost items easier.
