Principal's Corner
Thank you!
I can't thank you enough for a great first week back to school. I appreciate all of the kind words and support this week. You have made me feel very at home. Now that the kids are on campus, I'm even more excited to be a Wildcat!
I spent much time this week getting into classrooms to see you in action. I must say that I am impressed with the quality of instruction I see already. Even on the crazy tropical storm day, I saw students fully engaged down to the last minute of the school day. Bell-to-bell instruction is happening, and your students WILL benefit.
Each week, I'll give some shoutouts here on the newsletter. I will never be able to write about ALL the great things I see, but I'll always try to mention a few standouts.
Shoutouts this week:
- To Mrs. Brown who has stepped up to become the Beginning Teacher coordinator!
- To Mrs. Jarman for getting things organized and going with our Wildcat Pride.
- To Mrs. Gurganus. Her math lesson on Friday afternoon had 100% engagement from the students in her 4th period class. I enjoyed visiting!
- To Mr. Brown who has assumed duties as the CTE department chair.
- To Ms. Moore and Mr. Edwards for doing an awesome job distributing 1:1 laptops in the media center.
- To Coach Roed and the Men's soccer team for their win over East Carteret. Great job guys!
- To Assistant Principals Mrs. Misciagno and Mrs. Turner and SRO Deputy Seifert for taming the parking lot and buses this week.
- To Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Cox, and Mr. Fields. They are a finely-tuned team who have handled a massive amount of enrollments, withdrawals, and schedule changes.
- To Mrs. Maready for being on top of attendance and head-count.
- To Mrs. Willaford. The beginning of a new year means lots of money receipts. She is doing a great job!
Have a great week!

Quickwrites involve asking a question, giving people a set amount of time for responding (usually between one to ten minutes), and either hearing or reading the responses. The quickwrite can be modified endlessly, depending on circumstances. Quickwrites encourage critical thinking warm-ups: use the quickwrite at the start of a class to get students focused on a new concept, or the material from last class, or preparatory reading material, etc. Student-directed quickwrites: have students lead the quickwrite session, having prepared a question in advance and thought through a method for fielding the responses. Class-closers: as with the warm-ups, use the quickwrite to prompt reflection through summary, synthesis, explanation, a question.
What Is a Professional Learning Community?
The term “PLC” has been used so to describe every imaginable gathering of educators—grade-level teaching teams, staff informational meetings, department meetings, district planning teams.
In reality, the big ideas that represent the core principles of professional learning communities are:
· Big Idea #1: Not simply ensuring that students are taught but ensuring that they learn
· Big Idea #2: Planning & working collaboratively towards common goals
· Big Idea #3: Focusing on results & actions – not just data
Consider what changes these big ideas imply for PLCs at RHS this year.

From Mr. Jay Fields
Staff,
I am very appreciative in their efforts in helping get all the missing documents turned into guidance thus far. Huge impact on our Cumulative folder inventories will be seen at end of year.
Thanks,
Jay
