Whitford Catholic Primary School
Newsletter 27 - 29 August 2018
Message from the Principal
Father’s Day
Father’s Day is an important opportunity for our children to tell their dads and father figures how much they love and appreciate them. We know that in our community, we have many different types of dads - new dads, old dads, grandads, dads-in-law, stepdads, serious dads, funny dads and even more. With this in mind, we would love to see you at our Fathers' and Grandfathers' Day breakfast this Friday morning. Please check out the information further in the newsletter.
Boys and Girls Dance
I congratulate Mrs Candice D’Adamo and the fabulous boy and girl dancers who performed in the Catholic Performing Arts Festival at the Perth Convention Centre last Friday evening. The opportunities that these children have embraced have really helped them to develop skills, grow in confidence and embrace performing at a high level. Many thanks to the staff who have also given of their own time to support these students throughout rehearsals and performances.
Tournament of the Minds
Last Saturday 26 August, two teams of combined Year 4,5 & 6 students participated in the Tournament of the Minds competition at Edith Cowan University. Both the Language Literature and STEM teams performed really well in presenting a long-term challenge and then participating in a spontaneous challenge. The judges were most impressed with the teamwork, presentation and application to each complex problem-solving challenge. Thank you to Mrs Andrea Yeo, Mrs Gen Fenlon and Mr Andrew De Maio for giving the children an awesome opportunity to work together, problem solve, use higher order thinking skills, research and be creative. These students have represented the school really well and we are very proud of them - a top effort!
Congratulations to the following team members:
Language Literature: Erin Kretschmer, Grace Kane, Addison Woodgate, Eliza Boylen, Cian Corcoran, Ethan Nicholls and Hayley Cavanagh
Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM): Amon Ross, Christopher Sanders, Jeremy Lewis, Sienna Forsyth, Audrey Pettinicchio, Doireann Lynch and Jacob Smith.
Well done Taj!
Congratulations to Taj Butter (Year 5) on competing in the National Cross Country Championships on the Gold Coast. Taj finished 13th in his age division and was first out of the West Australian competitors. A fabulous effort Taj.

Whitty Dads Update
Thanks to everyone in the community that came out to support the Whitty Dads Bunnings BBQ on Saturday 25th Aug. Special thanks to our army of volunteer Dads and Mums who ran the show during the day. You all gave your time and energy to make the event a success, both in the lead up and on the day. Finally to the WCPS staff team and the P&F Association, who provided open access to their resources and full support. Together we have all contributed to the Fathering Project vision of helping Fathers and Father figures to be the best they can be, for their children and the wider community. We aimed to sell 550 sausages in a bun on the day but in the end sold 750. The success of the event will allow us to provide our targeted donation back to the Fathering Project of $200, to be matched by the school. The remainder of the profit – to be calculated this week, but expected to be approximately $500 – will be used to purchase items for Whitty Dads events.
But this weekend was not about the money. The best thing about the weekend was seeing the connectedness and engagement of Dads in our WCPS community. It is clear that the Fathering Project also resonates in the wider community. As well as buying a sausage many of our BBQ customers left cash donations, telling us that they love the work the Fathering Project does, and that it’s great to see it in action at WCPS. Particularly notable was families we met at the BBQ that have children enrolled in WCPS for future years, commenting positively on seeing their future school linked to the Fathering Project.
Stay posted for an invitation in the very near future to provide your input into items that we can purchase with the BBQ profits, to make future Whitty Dads events fun and engaging activities for all. We look forward to next year’s BBQ!
And finally, we can’t finish without a BBQ Dads Joke!
What do you call a group of men waiting for a haircut?
A barbecue!
