The Week of August 9-13, 2021

WELCOME BACK MUSTANGS!

On behalf of the Walnut High School staff, I am happy to welcome you and your child to the 2021-2022 school year. Monday, August 9, will be 514 days since the last time we had ALL of our students and staff back on campus. We know it will take some time to get back into the rhythm for everyone. Our amazing and devoted staff have been working all week planning and preparing for your child(ren) as they reintegrate back to our campus.

This year, we made a commitment as a staff to be ALL IN making this transition back to school uplifting, safe, and supportive for our students. When your child arrives on campus Monday morning, we will have our staff, student leaders, cheer team, and Blue Thunder greeting our Mustangs. Our teachers are working on integrating lessons on the first day that focus on student connection. We will have our ASB leaders (look for their ASB polos) and staff around campus throughout the day helping with directions. We also are handing out a surprise to every student as they enter campus on Monday.

The staff and I are committed to creating a well-rounded educational experience for our students this school year. Walnut High School is a place where students of all backgrounds can form lifelong connections whether inside the classroom or part of an extra-curricular group. This year will be full of opportunities and challenges. Take advantage of the opportunities, and meet the challenges with determination and the help of our wonderful staff. I have one challenge for all students as we start the year. GET CONNECTED! Walnut High School is a community, and this school year, we expect everyone to participate and thrive in this community!

BE ALL IN!

News and Announcements

Return to Campus Important Info

We want to reiterate our commitment to student safety throughout our School District. Our top priority is the health and well-being of our students and staff. Since since day one of the pandemic, we continue to partner with, rely on, and follow the guidance and direction of entities such as the California Department of Public Health, the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Health, and the Los Angeles County Office of Education. We continue to implement and sustain their recommendations and requirements in terms of addressing student and staff safety related to COVID-19. Below are important reminders and resources to help ensure a safe return for our students.

One Time Health Screening

Parents/guardians must complete a one-time 2021/2022 COVID-19 Student Health Screening form acknowledging responsibility for your child’s daily health screening prior to entering school campus. This form is now available on AERIES portal and must be completed for each child that attends WVUSD. A banner will appear in each AERIES account prior to the start of school.

Return to Campus Reminders

Picture Day - Friday August 13th

Dress up and look sharp! Picture day will be held on August 13th in the MPR for our Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors! Students will go during their PE class. If students do not have a PE class, they can go before school, during lunch, or after school.

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT - AUGUST 26

Out of an abundance of caution due to the fact that with multiple parents and students on campus at the same time, some school facilities, such as hallways, could become overcrowded and potentially present a safety concern. We have decided to hold our Back to School Night virtually on August 26 at 6:00 pm. Virtual Back to School will be held synchronously with parents having an opportunity to have interaction with a teacher (though videos/overview can still be shared).

Students With a Free Period

Students with a free period in their schedule (periods 1,5,6) must bring their schedule with them to the front of the library so that they can have a sticker placed on their student I.D. on Wednesday, August 11th or Thursday, August 12th. You will need a printed or digital copy of your class schedule and student ID card to leave campus on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. After that, you will need a sticker to either enter or exit campus.

WHS DRAMA DEPARTMENT AUDITION NOTICE

The Walnut High School Drama Department is excited to present Reginald Rose's thriller “Twelve Angry Jurors" this fall at the Walnut High School Performing Arts Center. The play follows a 19-year-old man who just stood trial for the fatal stabbing of his father. It looks like an open-and-shut case—until one of the jurors begins opening the others' eyes to the facts.

Auditions will be held Wednesday, August 18 at 2 PM in the Performing Arts Center. Audition packets can be picked up from Mrs. Roberts in T1 or at the auditions. There will be an optional audition workshop on Tuesday, August 17 at 3 PM in T1. Auditions are OPEN TO ALL WHS STUDENTS.

WVUSD Nutrition Services FAQs

All enrolled students will receive meals at no cost for the 2021-2022 school year.

Hot and cold meals are part of the menus and meals will be served "ready to eat" to our students on campus. The choices at the middle and high schools will be extremely limited as we start school, in order to expedite the lines.

Keep in mind that we have to be prepared to serve all students at the school site within the same breakfast and lunch period pre-COVID with limited staffing.

We thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through our "New Normal."

Please contact Evelyn Lovato in nutrition services should you have any questions or concerns OR click the link below.

HOW TO: Open Your Lockers at Walnut High School

During registration students should have received their locker assignment and combinations. We created a video to help your student open their locker. Please show them this video if they need it. There will be additional help in the textbook room during lunch for the first week of school.

School Lunch Policy

Due to safety concerns, we DO NOT accept student lunches in the office. We understand the importance of student nutrition, but we encourage students to either purchase lunch at school or bring their lunch from home. Food, drinks, or other items are NOT to be passed to students through the fence. This is STRICTLY PROHIBITED.

Please Note: Parents can now access the Food Services Department from our website under the Parents tab. On that page, parents can set up and deposit funds into their student's lunch account for purchasing lunch on campus.
