Room 8 News
Mrs. Fitzgerald, 3rd Grade
January 15, 2016
We had a great week, filled with lots of fun activities! Our class visited fourth grade today and got to have a sneak peek of what they will be doing next school year. It sounds like they all had a great time!
This week in reading we focused on using graphic sources to enhance reading comprehension. We also continued reading James and the Giant Peach. We played a Kahoot grammar review game and completed the grammar study guide together.
In math we learned how to multiply a two-digit number by a two-digit number. We also learned how to read a thermometer, including temperatures below zero.
We began our next science adventure: all about forces and motion. We previewed the chapter vocabulary and practiced reading and summarizing science articles. Today we discussed Native American totem poles in social studies, then created our own totem poles.
Test Re-Take Policy
In order to begin the process on assisting our students to be successful in our fourth grade program, starting in the third quarter, retakes on tests are allowed only in Reading Unit tests and Math. A re-test will only be granted if a child scored 75% or below on the test. In addition, a retake is only allowed one time per subject per quarter. The retake policy will begin on Monday, January 25th.
Also, this week we talked a lot about Martin Luther King. We read a biography of his life and discussed his vision and belief that love creates more love. Then we watched a video of his "I have a dream" speech and the students each wrote their own "I have a dream" speeches. I was SO impressed and humbled by their insight and eloquent writing. Please take a moment to read their speeches, which are posted on the closet doors. Great job, Room 8!
Open House/Curriculum Night
We will be having our annual Open House/Curriculum Night for current and perspective parents on Thursday, January 21st from 5:30 P.M. - 7:00 P.M. This is a great opportunity to meet the fourth grade teachers and learn about the curriculum for next year. On this night, preview of the curriculum is at 5:30 P.M., and presentations will begin at 6:00 P.M. Please save the date and join us for the event.
