PRINCIPAL'S POINT
I hope each of you had a wonderful Holiday season and a Happy New Year. I hope you enjoyed quality time with family and friends making lots of memories with your kids. January is an exciting time! It is really a time renewal, refresh, and a time to focus on future goals. I am a big believer in the mental mindset and the positive impact that can have on an individual. I think that a good real life lesson for kids to learn is the power of goal setting.
I hope that you will help in the mission of kids setting and working towards a goal. It is really important to start with the "End in Mind". It really is a skill that will help kids be successful and productive citizens. Awareness of current ability, knowledge of what you need to do to reach the goal, and the drive to get to the goal are all crucial to the successful completion of the goal. Please encourage your children to set goals and work towards them. It could be with sports, hunting, academics, hobbies, or really anything! Will we always meet our goal... no, but it is important to always work towards something greater.
Thanks,
Wayne Dierker
Principal
Title 1 Tidbits
Happy New Year! Hope everyone had a great break with family and friends. The second half of the school year has begun and Title 1 has a few more tips.
Reading tips:
Many students have a hard time rhyming and that is a very important part of reading and spelling. Nursery rhymes use to be the way many children were introduced to this skill. Currently, very few people read these to their children leaving the skill to be learned at an older age.
How to help! Rhyming can be made into many games and does not have to be written down. A game could start as easy as one person saying a word such as fun the next person would come up with a rhyming word such as sun. Once all the words have been made for the _un word family go to another word family. If you would like more ideas please contact either Mrs. Mathers or Ms. Tiger for some resources.
Math tips:
Many children struggle to count on or back from a number.
For example when adding 10 plus 5, rather than saying 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 they go back and start at 1 and continue counting until 15 is reached. Many of these children are using their fingers as they count to 10. This method of counting on and back is not effective especially as the numbers get larger.
A good activity to help this skill is playing board games or even by just saying “I’m thinking of a number that is 2 more than 12. “ Then have the child start at 12 and count on 2 more reminding them the next number would be 13 and then 14. Remember to start with smaller numbers in the beginning.
As always, please don’t hesitate to contact Title 1 if you have any questions or would like some resources to help you help your child(ren).
