First Grade News
Garro's Superheroes April 4---April 8
This week we will be learning how to count mixed sets of coins, please practice with your child at home. They should be able to name the coin and tell its value as well. We will also be learning about spending and saving along with needs and wants. If you haven't completed your homework assignment on this topic please do so this week and send it to school with your child.
We will also begin a unit on Texas this week. Your child will listen to fiction and nonfiction books about Texas. They will learn about the landforms, symbols, and what borders Texas.
WHAT ARE WE LEARNING?
Reading:
*I can use text evidence to answer questions about a story by high lighting the answer.
*I can recognize the craft an author has used by sharing with the class.
* I can make connections to stories by writing about it.
* I can identify a book as fiction or nonfiction by telling a friend.
*I can identify nonfiction text features by pointing them out to my peers.
* I can identify cause and effect by completing a graphic organizer.
Things I can practice after reading to someone at home:
*I can retell the BME of a story and explain what "PLOT" means by telling an adult.
*I can explain & record events in a story by writing in my journal.
*I can identify the Elements in a Story (Characters, Setting, Problem, & Solution) by writing in my journal .
Word Work & Grammar:
*I can identify patterns that make the long "a" sound in words by sorting words.
Writing:
*I can write a fractured fairy tale by using the writing process.
*I can gather information on a topic by doing research.
*I can write a friendly letter by using the writing process..
*I can identify the parts of a letter by labeling them.
Math:
*I can identify coins and their value by telling a friend.
*I can count mixed sets of coins by identifying the total amount.
*I can solve word problems by using the following thinking patterns to complete a UPS check
-SSM-Some and Some More
-SWA-Some Went Away
-BSD-Bigger Smaller Difference (used for how many more or comparing numbers)
*I can learn my doubles to help me solve problems in math.
*I can use place value to compare numbers as greater or less than.
*I can use place value to add and subtract 10 or 20 by solving equations
Social Studies/Science:
*I can identify Texas symbols by researching them.
*I can identify what states boarder Texas by locating them on a map.
*I can use a compass rose to identify what is North, South, East, and West of Texas by locating it on a map.
*I can describe the various landforms found int Texas by writing about them in my journal.
