B-C-S Schools Outlines Summer Projects
- High School Security Vestibule The entrance to Oak Harbor High School has undergone a major change this summer to make campus more safe. A small security vestibule has been added near the main entrance of the high school. Three classrooms adjacent to this addition have also been renovated to serve as the new Main Office to the high school. This work should be completed no later than the end of August. Once complete, all visitors will be required to enter at the security vestibule entrance during the school day. The security vestibule and new Main Office area will allow school officials to better control the access and movements of visitors to the campus during the school day. This will improve the safety of all who use the high school campus. The project cost is $500,000. It is funded with capital improvement funds that have been put aside over the past four years. The district was able to save for this project due to increased tax revenue receipts resulting from the increase in value of Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Plant over the past four years.
- Planning for Improved Security at Other Buildings The Board is planning to improve the security at the entrances to Oak Harbor Middle School and R.C. Waters Elementary School as well. Planning will begin in the Fall of 2017. The district has also purchased additional cameras that will be placed at key locations around all of the buildings, and especially at the entrances of the Middle School and R.C. Waters, so that secretaries can better identify visitors before buzzing them in.
- Improved Wireless Internet Signal Currently underway is a project by Spectrum (formerly Time Warner) to hard wire internet cables to both Oak Harbor Middle School and R.C. Waters Elementary School. This hard wired internet access will improve the wireless internet signal at these two buildings. Given the importance of computers as tools in the instructional process, a strong wireless internet signal is just about as critical as electric service.
- High School Track The original track at Rocket Stadium was installed in 1984. It was repainted twice during its lifetime. During its 33 years of use, it has been known as the premiere track in our region being used for everything ranging from District track meets to community walking. Over the past few years, the track surface has began to deteriorate causing safety concerns. The project at hand is going to require a complete overhaul of the track. Based on recommendations of our contractor along with some trusted local experts, we believe the overhaul of the track--including a new asphalt base--is a necessary expense. This work on the asphalt base will mean that the track will not be ready for the start of the school year. However, this will not disrupt the use of Rocket Stadium during the football season. It is anticipated the the track will be completed by October 2017. The overall cost of this project is approximately $500,000. The project is funded by Permanent Improvement Levy funds that have been set aside for this project for the past several years.
- High School Auditorium Our High School Auditorium was also constructed in 1984, and we are lucky enough to have one of the nicest in the region. We have taken on the task of updating this great space in phases to keep it nice for generations to come. Last summer we replaced the stage ropes and rigging as well as updating some electrical items. This summer we are replacing stage curtains. Next summer we plan to paint the auditorium and install new carpet. This project is also funded by Permanent Improvement Funds generously made possible by a levy voted by our taxpayers.
- Rocket Launch Program This summer the district has established The Rocket Launch Program, which will serve as an alternative to the traditional educational setting beginning with the 2017-18 school year. The program will combine online learning with traditional face-to-face learning opportunities to create college and career ready students. The program will serve students in grades 7--12, and will be housed at Oak Harbor High School. Students for the program will be selected on a case-by-case basis by a committee based on many factors. The main goal of the Rocket Launch Program will be to make sure the district is meeting the educational needs of all students--especially students who are struggling in the traditional educational setting, but are on the verge of success. The Rocket Launch Program will be led by current teacher, Mrs. Amanda Thomas.
If anyone has any questions about these projects or anything else they are asked to call the Board Office at (419) 898-6210.
