6th Grade News
Goodbye, January…Hello, February….This month, our 6th graders will stay very busy in their core classes, learning even more amazing skills and content in all our subjects!
In Language Arts, we will continue to work on understanding Informational Text and Literature. Be on the lookout for paperwork regarding our next big project: The Reading Fair!!! All LA classes will be participating and details will soon be sent home!
In Social Studies, we are working on our Ancient Rome unit.
Science will be exploring the Geologic Time Scale. Then we will start Life Science by exploring populations and communities.
Regular math will be working with percents, fractions, and decimals. They will also be practicing how to find tax, tip and discount. (Real world situations using percents!) AT and ACC classes will be starting some geometry using surface area and volume. Using those 3-D shapes.
Can’t wait for the students to participate in our Annual 6th grade Career Day on February 14th. Students will get to listen to 8 adults talk about their Careers to get them starting to think about their futures. It is always a great day!
Don’t forget—we are working toward getting to the Kane County Cougars game on April 14th!! Students must read 200 pages every two weeks to earn a ticket, so be looking for the summary sheets to sign in the upcoming weeks.
Our Students of the Month for 6th grade are Aeden Wortman and Kylie Jones—great work, guys!
7th Grade News
With January rolling to a close, we are focused on the growth of the American Republican in Social Studies. Having finished our study on the Jeffersonians, we are now ready to address the presidency of Andrew Jackson. Along the way, we will examine the evolution of the modern political parties and the impact political parties made on the decisions of the government. We will also begin identifying clues and evidence of the events that will eventually lead us to the Civil War. We will also look into the advantages and disadvantages of our westward migration known as Manifest Destiny.
In science, we are finishing up our Astronomy unit. We will finish out the Astronomy unit with a group model project that will be completed in class. We will then be moving on to the Biology unit learning about cells and their organelles.
As we begin the back nine of our school year in Language Arts, we will continue to develop new word strategies. Information text and sources will season our readings, as will our experiences with R.A.C.E. response exercises. This month we will analyze text structures, technical passages, and visual components of everyday passages. Yes, there is an art to reading those confusing directions and advertisements.
In the math classes, we just finished up our chapter on equations and inequalities. During this chapter, the students learned how to solve one-step and two-step equations and inequalities. They also learned how to solve equations with rational number coefficients and how to work backward to problem solve. We are now working on our chapters over geometry. During the first chapter, the students will learn how to classify angles, triangles and polygons. They will also learn about scale drawings, drawing three-dimensional figures, and cross sections of 3-D figures. Once, we finish this lesson, we will go on to the second geometry chapter over area, volume, and surface area.
In pre-algebra, we just finished up our chapter on more equations and inequalities. During this chapter, the students learned how to solve multi-step equations and inequalities and equations with variables on both sides. They also learned how to solve equations for different variables and solving system of equations. We are now working on our next chapter over graphing lines. During this chapter, the students will learn how to graph linear equations, find the slopes of lines, and how to use slopes and intercepts to graph. They will also learn how to use point-slope form, direct variation, graphing inequalities with two variables, and lines of best fit. When we finish this chapter, we will be moving on to probability.
Our students of the month are Tate Frieders and Arbenita Rushani.
8th Grade News
The Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) is the Illinois state achievement test starting in March! We are busy preparing for those tests. In language arts, the students are not only preparing for the state tests, but they are finishing the novel, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne and will soon be writing an explanatory essay on the topic of the Holocaust. In science they are studying oceanography. In math, students are fully engaged in unit 4 – Graphing reflections, translations, and rotations on the coordinate plane. In history, students are finishing up learning about WWII and heading into a unit on the Cold War.
Please double check and make sure that all medical and conduct forms are turned in for those students who will be attending Washington, D.C. in February.
Students of the Month are Mikayla Schiradelly and Xander Clark. We are so lucky to have them as members of our team. They work hard every day, are always polite and always go that extra mile. We applaud your efforts and hard work.

Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone! How do you celebrate the day? One way to make it special is to encourage your whole family to write poems to each other or if some of them are not so brave – just read a poem that matches the person receiving it. From Shakespeare’s love sonnets to silly poems by Shel Silverstein – there is something for everyone. Here in the middle school learning center we have a big selection of all kinds of poetry. Just ask you student to check out a few poetry books and bring them home to share.
We just held out annual Tic Tac Toe Tournament and the winner for the 2nd year in a row is TYLER LISSMAN. It came down to a sudden death match against Luigi Colin. All thirty two players did a great job and congratulations to Tyler.
Our annual Rebecca Caudill Voting Party will be held this month. Students who read at least three of the nominated books will help choose a state-wide winner and enjoy donuts and prizes. Thank you to the Sandwich Education Foundation for making the program possible.
