February 2018
Message From the Principal
Dear Wheeler Families,
February is behind us and now we are hitting the last third of the year with many exciting teaching and learning events behind us and more to come! As I walk through classrooms, hallways, look at student work, student assessment data, it is amazing to see the growth of our students. Our teachers continue to work incredibly hard to ensure each of our students grow and are proud of their accomplishments. Your support as parents continues to be invaluable in the teaching and learning process. Our team work ensures our students receive a great education! I should also say that it is also amazing to see how fast many of our students have grown physically! It is often so noticeable to me this time of year especially with our 4th and 5th graders.
Around the beginning of February, we also stepped up our sharing of individual goals and celebrating acts of kindness. We continue to do this in many ways one of which is through our morning announcements. Below describes the information shared on the announcements each morning at Wheeler School!
Every day, a 5th grade student reads the daily announcements (lunch for the day, leading the moment of silence, and the pledge of allegiance). Student council representatives will also make announcements periodically to promote our spirited Fridays!
Mondays:
- Mr. B. announces individual student birthdays for the week, wishing each student a "Happy Birthday". Following announcements, those students report to the office to receive a birthday pencil.
- One student from each class in grades 3, 4, and 5 is able to recognize another student for an act of kindness. Ask your child about it!
Tuesdays:
- Mr. B. announces the PACK activities available for students to exchange their blue tickets to participate in one or more of those activities.
- Mr. B or the designated 5th grade student will lead students through "PACK practice". The whole school will repeat what P and A and C and K stand for and teachers will periodically review what that looks like at recess, lunch, in class, in the hallways etc..
Wednesdays: Goal Sharing: Students from each class will share one of their individual goals and their action plan for achieving that goal. A picture of your child reading their goal over the announcements is taken and posted on our goal sharing board across from the Cafe.
Thursdays: One student from each class in grades K, 1, and 2 is able to recognize another student for an act of kindness. Ask your child about it!
Fridays: Mr. B. announces our leaders of the PACK for the week at Wheeler School and then those students report to the office, receive their certificate, and get their pic taken as a group. The last Friday of every month, Mr. B. announces the PACK Raffle Winners!
The last statement said everyday on the announcements by the designated 5th grader and Mr. B. is "Work hard, make your best effort, and be the best leader of the PACK you can possibly be!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Lastly, We are in the final stages of planning the phasing of the renovation project. This includes the timeline for which parts of the building will be renovated first, next , etc.. along with where students and teachers will relocate within the building during the construction. In the coming weeks, I will use one of our PTO meetings or invite parents to come in one evening so that I can walk everyone through the phasing plan for the project. I will say that our plan is looking very good!
Thanks and wishing everyone a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Mr. B.

Kindergarten learned about African American artist Faith Ringgold and created art based on her book Tar Beach. First graders created Kente cloth from the African country of Ghana. Second grade students made masks out of clay based on masks from the West coast of Africa. Third grade students made Freedom Quilts based on the quilt codes slaves used to use to escape to freedom. Fourth grade students made watercolor paintings of African Masks and Fifth grade students created prints of Adinkra symbols from the country of Ghana.

"Congratulations on an amazing and meaningful event at Wheeler! I have never seen my boys so excited to participate in a fundraiser. It was completely age appropriate, they learned from it and understood the importance of their actions. I can’t believe how even my youngest son has made comments about staying away from Tobacco. The message was well taught and so meaningful coming from their favorite PE teacher! I am also so happy that you included Jack Ericksen in this. That was such a powerful and beautiful connection for these kids to see their buddy as a Heart Hero. Events like this are why we love the community and culture at Wheeler School!"
"I just want to say how much fun my kids had during jump rope for heart. They are still talking about it."
