A weekly update from Carleton Middle School.
Operating Millage Renewal
1) On Tuesday, May 2, 2017, the voters in WCS will be asked to RENEW the district's operating millage.
2) The district last renewed this millage in 2007 for a 10-year period, which expires this December 31, 2017.
3) The ballot for this operating millage contains two renewals:
a) 18 mills for businesses, rental owners, and other non-exempt properties
b) 9 mills for principal homeowners (only 6.7766 mills is currently being levied)
4) This millage is a RENEWAL with a ZERO rate increase in taxation, except for the Headlee rollback restoration of .18 mills as required by state law.
5) Due to the fiscal responsibility of the district, an INCREASE in taxes is NOT REQUIRED.
6) This operating millage generates 23% of the district's operating revenue with the remaining 77% coming from state and federal sources.
7) The operating budget pays for teachers, principals, support staff, and the many quality programs and services the district provides to the community.
8) The bond election last year in May 2016 was for building and site improvements (roofs, parking lots, heating & cooling, etc.) and the revenue generated from it CANNOT be used for operating expenses.
9) The failure of this millage would have catastrophic financial implications for the district and the community at large.
10) More information is available on our district website at www.wcskids.net

As Valentine’s Day has come and gone I know many of you have spent time telling your loved ones how much you care for and appreciate them. We here at Carleton have spent some time doing the same thing.
Last week at our staff meeting Mr. Kausch and I asked the staff to identify students for our “Student Success Story” initiative that have been doing a great job. Mr. Kausch and I have been working through an outpouring of love for our students by our staff one student at a time, letting them know that they were noticed. We have so many hardworking and compassionate students and truly appreciate that. As you notice your son or daughter doing what I call “Just coming to work and doing your job well.” Please congratulate them because the ability to show up on time and work hard will take many of our young Carleton Colts very far.
Regarding after school events.
I want to bring to light a few policies for our after school activities. For students’ safety we expect all students to remain in supervised areas during all after school activities. Students who leave an event will not be permitted to return. Please make sure that all students are picked up promptly after the event has ended. For basketball this is typically at 6:00pm.
