LMS Tiger Talk
January 27, 2022
Principal's Message
Over the past few weeks, we've been preparing and sharing information with our 8th grade students regarding the scheduling process for their 9th grade year at LHS. In addition to teacher classroom presentations, video resources and visits from the high school counselors, this week our 8th graders also had the chance to hear from a student panel composed of current students from LHS. This group of students discussed their own experience with courses at the high school and answered questions posed by our 8th grade student body. It was awesome for our rising 9th graders to hear from their older peers and learn from their experiences. Today, 8th grade students completed and submitted their scheduling requests and our 7th graders are up next! We'll begin communicating details for our 7th grade scheduling process for their 8th grade year next Friday.
Just like so many of you and folks from across our community and city, we continue to ride the excitement of the Cincinnati Bengals in the playoffs for another chance at the Superbowl! We are also still trying for that chance for a visit from the Cincinnati Bengals for a school-wide pep assembly and rooting on the team! It's been so much fun again this year, and we wish you all a happy WHO-DEY this Sunday! #RuleYourSchool #RuleTheJungle
Have a great weekend, all.
Take care and Go Tigers!

You can check out the video here. Great job, Michael!

Research Findings on E-cigarettes from Health Services Team
A Link Between E-cigarettes, Heart Arrhythmias, and Sudden Cardiac Arrest:
The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) has reached epidemic proportions amidst perceptions that it is safer than smoking. In the past 4 years, youth use of e-cigs has surged, with more than one-quarter of high schoolers and one-tenth of middle schoolers in the United States reporting current use before the COVID-19 pandemic.
With sudden cardiac arrest in young adults being a very hot topic right now, our health services team thought this would be a good time to share some research done by the University of Louisville. This study has shown that the solvents or chemicals used in vape pens or e-cigarettes have the potential to impact the electrical activity of the heart.
“Our findings demonstrate that short-term exposure to e-cigarettes can destabilize heart rhythm through specific chemicals within e-liquids,” said Alex Carll, assistant professor in the UofL Department of Physiology who led the study. “These findings suggest that e-cigarette use involving certain flavors or solvent vehicles may disrupt the heart’s electrical conduction and provoke arrhythmias. These effects could increase the risk for atrial or ventricular fibrillation and sudden cardiac arrest.” “The findings of this study are important because they provide fresh evidence that the use of e-cigarettes could interfere with normal heart rhythms – something we did not know before,” Bhatnagar said.
Given this new information, we need to understand the additional potential risks of vaping among teens and adolescents. We wanted parents to have this information in order to open the door for conversations about vaping and e-cig use and its potential risks to the cardiovascular system.

Calling all Science Loving Presenters!
Do you love science? Have a science-based career? Or maybe a cool hobby?
We are currently looking for presenters for our LIS Science Day on Thursday, March 30th, from 7:45 am until 1:45 pm. (Lunch will be provided) Our theme for the year is Science is FUN.
The idea would be to present a topic of your choice, involving science, for about 40 minutes to 5 different groups of students. Each homeroom group has about 28 kids. Your presentation could be anything from a lesson to a demonstration to an explanation of your job, etc. Possibilities are endless and we are happy to help along the way. We're wanting to engage students and show them how Science is FUN.
We can only pull off this day if we obtain enough presenters. We would forever be grateful for your help! Please email or call/text Tara Hamilton at tarahamilton411@hotmail.com or 513-255-5435. Thank you so much!
