School Attendance - It's KEY to school success!!!!
We just want to remind everyone how important attendance in school is important! We definitely understand that when students are contagious or very sick that they should not come to school - please don't spread germs! And we also understand there are sometimes special family trips. When you have these trips, please go online and submit the "Educational Opportunity" form and you can possibly get excused absences for those events. But many folks forget that attendance is a huge component of athletic eligibility! In order to be eligible to try out for any of our school teams, students must be present 85% of the days in the semester prior to the season. Therefore, if a student has more than 13.5 absences, whether it's excused or unexcused, the student will not be eligible to try out for that sport. Please keep track of this if you have a student athlete! Also, having multiple unexcused absences can require you to have a meeting with the school social worker and principal, so it's so important that you send in notes when students are absent. A note does not guarantee an excused absence, but when the reason for that note is excused, the absence has more reasonable documentation so that truancy doesn't become an issue. If a student collects many unexcused absences, truancy charges are always a possibility. We don't ever want this to happen, but it is law that students be in school. This is a law because all research and experience points to the importance of being PRESENT in school to increase school success. If you ever have any questions about your chid's attendance, please call your grade level school counselor (Ms. Pauls for 6th grade; Ms. Ligon for 7th grade; Ms. Duncan for 8th grade). Thank you!
