The First Amendment
an amricans most important freedom
In America most citizens would agree that the first amendment, our freedom of speech, is the most important right. The first amendment also includes freedom of press, freedom of religion, and the freedom of assembly. Many Americans however take these freedoms for granted when billions of people around the world do not have these freedoms that are a part of our everyday lives.
With out these simple freedoms the United States of America would be a very different place. I personally have never really thought about how my freedom of speech effected me until now. I realize that without the freedom of speech social media websites like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, etc. would probably not exist. People like me wouldn't be able to say, or in this case, type what ever they wanted. That would be a very miserable place to live.
Later in the day I watch the news (Freedom of the press), something else that would be different if the first amendment did not exist. People like reporters and journalist would not have a job where they could report whatever they wanted. The newspaper would be controlled by the government. We wouldn't know the truth behind stories or the things that were going on in the country. Like the current issue in Ferguson right now. If it weren't for the freedom of press, I wouldn't know what was going on.
While on the topic of Ferguson, those people who are protesting are showing their freedom of assembly. I'm glad that in our country if people don't like something they can gather in one place to show it. With out this freedom, people would have a harder time showing that they disapprove of something or someone.
The final freedom I would like to talk about is freedom of religion. As a Christian I am very happy to have this freedom. It would be horrible to have someone tell me what I have to believe or who I have to worship. Freedom of religion is one of the things I really love about America. Our first amendment has really made this country the land of the free.
