Olson School Improvement Goals 2018-19
SOCIAL EMOTIONAL GROWTH
One of our School Improvement goals this year is to increase the % of students with 2 or fewer behavior referrals. "Minor" and "Major" Behavior Referrals are used by teachers/staff to indicate that a student has behaved in a way that interrupts his/her learning or the learning of others, is disrespectful of others or school property, and/or violates our school expectations for positive and appropriate behavior. Parents are notified when a student has received a "referral" with information about the incident and the consequences issued.
Most importantly, we continue to teach the expected behaviors and reinforce these in the classrooms, cafeteria, on the bus, on the playground, and throughout the school. Classroom expectations are posted and students have helped develop these. Morning Meetings, Closing Circles, Second Step lessons, Social Skills activities, modeling, and shared readings are used to develop a clear understanding of behavioral expectations. Responsive Classroom strategies are used to build community, teach respect and responsibility, and provide opportunities for integration of academics and social emotional skills.

BUILDING PERSEVERANCE
1. Help your child set goals and talk through the steps to achieve those goals.
2. Share stories or read books about people who have worked hard to overcome obstacles to achieve their goals.
3. Interview friends or family members who have worked hard to reach long-term goals.
4. When children feel discouraged, ask "What's the hard part?" and then work together to break down the challenge and work through it.
5. Practice challenges ~ Play games, work through puzzles, try new things together and talk about the value of perseverance, grit, and resilience.
PROJECT MISTLETOE
GIRLS ON THE RUN
We need YOU! Girls on the Run is looking for coaches at all sites. This link will take interested you to the website and application: https://www.gotrnwil.org/Coach
Olson is proud to be a part of Girls on the Run®. Girls in grades 3rd - 5th are invited to participate. They meet twice a week in early spring in small teams where the girls learn life skills through dynamic, interactive lessons and running games. The curriculum is taught by certified Girls on the Run coaches and includes three parts: understanding ourselves, valuing relationships and teamwork and understanding how we connect with and shape the world at large.
Running is used to inspire and motivate girls, encourage lifelong health and fitness, and build confidence through accomplishment. Important social, psychological, and physical skills and abilities are developed and reinforced throughout the program. At each season's conclusion, the girls and their running buddies complete a 5K running event which gives them a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals.
Please consider participating as a coach ~ For more information please check the GOTR website.
CAN YOUR CHILD TIE HIS/HER OWN SHOES?
CHROMEBOOK EXPECTATIONS (continued)
Students follow these expectations with their chromebooks:
We only add educational extensions and add-ons when our teacher asks us to.
We sign-out of our Chromebook when we are not using it.
Our passwords are private so we do not share with others.
If we have lift-top desks, we remove our Chromebooks from the top before opening our desk.
We transport our devices to and from school in the protective case.
We maintain clean devices using device-safe damp cloths.
