The Principal's Office
I hope this newsletter finds you all well rested after the weekend!!! I apologize that the MKG Messenger did not go out on Friday. Unfortunately the Blackboard Connect website was down and I was not able to send it out. I hope you enjoy this Monday edition!!!!
We were VERY excited to have a visit from JiJi, the mascot from ST Math!!! This visit was to celebrate exceeding our mid-year goal of 40% Syllabus Completion (we actually were at 41%!!!). The students have worked very hard and have persevered through many levels and objectives.
Great job to the MKG Drama Club on their performance!!!!!
Our Character Strong word of the month for February is kindness.
Kindness: the choice to act with words, gifts, or actions to bring appreciation, positivity, and encouragement to others and yourself.

Grade 1
First graders were very excited to meet JiJi this week. It was a wonderful reward for all their hard work on ST Math. We are finishing Topic 6 in math. Students will continue to practice analyzing data and creating graphs. We will begin Topic 13. They will learn to write and tell time to the hour and half-hour. In ELA, we will soon begin our next unit of study on Patriotic Symbols and Songs.
Grade 2
Grade 2 students completed Topic 5 & 6, and are in the middle of Topic 8 and 14. In Topic 5 & 6, students learned strategies for double and triple-digit addition and subtraction. Topic 8 students learn about how to tell time and count with dollars and coins. Reading & understanding graphs takes place in Topic 14. We are taking off for our “Trip Around the World on Monday”! Our first stop is Antarctica. In Science, we will be learning about Landforms, and how they can be changed over time! All of our students will participate in the fun activities we have planned for our 100th day of school, February 10th! We had a great visit from JiJi!
Mrs. Germano’s class learned all about CONTRACTIONS! Can you say ‘apostrophe’ ten times fast!
Grade 3
Our students are working on addition and subtraction with regrouping. Basic addition and subtraction fact fluency is an essential skill as students move into more complicated math calculations. Have your child double check their homework and math problems to determine if their answer is reasonable. This helps develop number sense and precision. We encourage all students to take pride in their work and establish strong work habits.
Grade 3 students in Mrs. Cornell’s class experimented with magnets and magnetic force. They worked in cooperative groups rotating through science stations. They recorded their observations in their science notebooks.
Grade 4
Currently in fourth grade, we are learning a variety of ways to build equivalent fractions. We are also learning that when comparing fractions, it is important to pay attention to the size of the whole. Because we are making such good progress in ST Math, the entire grade level had a visit from GiGi, the ST Math penguin. We continue to build background knowledge around WWII for our historical fiction reading unit. Big Ryan, a storyteller, will be visiting next week and guide the students in writing and storytelling activities. Today we were treated to the Drama Club’s production of Seussical.
Grade 5
Students in fifth grade continue to grow their vocabulary with Word Work. In Mr. O'Brien's room, students are making crosswords for partners, building a stronger understanding of roots and meanings. As our technology grows, students in fifth grade will soon be 1:1 in every classroom. This helps with all standards and expectations in 21st century learning. Some students are collaborating writing stories and combining characters and ideas. Some are even working on creating their own graphic novels. All are enjoying the opportunity to choose what and how they are creating a final product.
