Initiative is being asked to do things by yourself without being asked to.

Signs of Success:

* Your teacher/parents can rely on you to do a job without being asked to

* People might say ‘you are a helpful person’

* You might get a comment on your report ‘a responsible, mature student’

* You are often asked to do important jobs for people

Our hearts go out to the families and wider community who have been affected by the tragedies in Christchurch last week. This incident has changed our nation forever and will affect everyone in different ways. As a staff we discussed our approach to this terrible terrorist attack on Monday morning and we decided that we would focus on keeping the students and school calm, reassure our kids that they are safe, maintain our routines and, if required, respond to students who have been affected or have questions. Big thanks to the VS teaching team who have done an amazing job with this over the week and thanks to our families for reassuring your child(ren) at home. There are some very useful sites you can visit, one of the best ones if you need it is:

Our thoughts are also with all the school kids and teachers in Christchurch who went in to 'Lockdown' last Friday - this is a tough thing to do and maintain.

We will be practising our lockdown procedure next week as a result. The key to a lockdown is to have excellent communication between staff and then with parents and families. Our staff have an app on their phones that has our procedure, class roll and allows us to update each other. If we ever have to go in to lockdown for real, you will receive and alert on your phone from our SMS system here at school. We will also update whanau on our facebook page and our school app. We hope we never have to do this for real, but we must be prepared for any outcome.

In the wake of the tragedy in Christchurch organisers are working with the NPDC, Migrant Connections and the Muslim Association of Taranaki have planned a candlelight vigil this Friday 22 March at the Bowl of Brooklands at 7.00pm. All are welcome to attend.

If you know of any families/enrolments that may be coming to Vogeltown, please get them to contact Lee Newland or Mr Ogle.

If your child is turning 5 soon and you are planning on bringing them to Vogeltown, then please can you get an enrolment pack from the office and get the form in.

As part of planning for class sizes and maintaining good student to teacher class ratios, we need to know what enrolments we have coming to VS.

A reminder that our school is governed by an enrolment scheme. Families and students who live within the school zone are automatically accepted. Out of zone families and students need to apply for an 'Out of Zone application' to come to VS. More info about the enrolment scheme can be found here: http://www.vogeltown.school.nz/zoning-2016/out-of-zone-enrollment-form/

The Weetbix TRYathlon is approaching fast. It is on next Tuesday 26th March at Ngamotu Beach. Your child should have their event kit. On the day I will go to Ngamotu Beach before school and put up our Vogeltown Gazebo. When you come down register your child and take their bike to the transition area. Then come and find us at the Gazebo. You are responsible for getting your child to and from the event. It is always a lot of fun and we look forward to seeing you there. Below is a link to access information for the NP TRYathlon including the event day schedule, swim start times, what to do when you arrive and what you will need.

See you Tuesday.

Mike George

This year is election year for all schools to nominate and appoint new Board of Trustees members. We have some of our current BOT leaving us after this term and will not be seeking re-election. This leaves the way for any new members of our community who would like to be part of our Board Of Trustees to think about putting themselves up for election.

If you have never thought about being on the BOT, then now might be the time! It is a great position and an important one to help with the direction and governance decisions of the school.

The important dates for this year are:

10th May Call for BoT nominations

24th May Nominations close

29th May Voting papers are sent out to families on the roll

June 7 Election Day

June 13 Votes counted

June 14 New VS BoT takes office.

Thanks to Suzy Wolfe in the office who is our Returning Officer for 2019.

With the fine weather back this week and looking like it could stay warm for the rest of this month, we are going to keep the pool open as long as the weather will let us. We are aiming to close the pool and end the swimming season at the end of this term. We will be draining the pool and re-painting it in the holidays.

Big thanks to Mr McAuley who has done an amazing job with the pool this season! Tu Meke!

One of the jobs for Class Reps has become the changing of the flag at the senior side each morning. Currently we have 14 different cultures at Vogeltown and so we have 14 different flags. Each day we are putting up a different country and the kids have to guess which country it is. It is great to hear the kids who have a relationship with that country and flag identify it and be so excited to see it flying! We have also leant a lot about how to correctly fold the flag and look after flags. Have a look next time you are in and see if you can correctly identify which country's flag is flying!

We are doing another order of our famous Vogeltown sweatshirts. We need all orders in by the last week of this term. You can download the order form from off our school website - see link:

The cost is $52 per sweatshirt - this includes a name on the back (very handy for finding a lost sweatshirt at school).

Order forms must be at the office by the last day of this term as we order them over the holidays ready to be handed out day one of term two.

Health Curriculum survey at Vogeltown 2019

Below is a link for the Health Survey. We have to complete this survey each year as part of our self review of health and well being. The feedback we receive will help us to build a better health curriculum for our community, some guidance for our teaching and learning and to continue to develop trends that we need to plan for in the future.

There are two links, one in google form and one in survey monkey, both are the same questions.

Here are the links -

As part of reporting to parents and caregivers over the year about your child's progress, we offer Learning Conferences. This is a great time to meet with your child's teacher and discuss their current competencies, learning and learning goals for the rest of the year. This year we are doing Learning Conferences a little earlier than in previous years, with conferences in the last week of this term. At this conference you will receive a progress report covering all of the above.

We aim for 100% attendance by parents and caregivers - if you can not make a conference we will contact you by phone to book a time or do one over the phone.

The process for formally reporting to whanau is:

Term 1 Progress Report & Learning Conferences

Term 2 Personal and Social competencies report (this will come home)

Term 3 Progress Report & Learning Conferences

Term 4 Summative Report (this will come home).

Our interviews this term will be on Wednesday 10th April and Thursday 11th April. Mrs Seed (Room 9) will be away on the Wednesday so you will be able to book times to meet on Monday the 8th April instead. To book a time with your child’s teacher, please use the website - www.parentinterviews.co.nz

and use the following codes:

Monday 8th April (Room 9 whanau only)

Wednesday 10th and Thursday 11th April. (Please note, you can not book Room 9 on the Wednesday the 10th)

On Wednesday and Thursday we will be closing the school early to accomodate for all whanau to be able to meet with their child's teacher. We ask that you pick up your child at 2pm on these days.

At Vogeltown we have a number of teachers on duty on both sides of the road and on both fields at the senior school. Feedback from the Yr 6 leavers survey last year was that the kids struggled to find a teacher on duty, so we have rectified this. As of today all teachers on duty at the junior school will be wearing 'pink' High visibility jackets! The teachers on the senior side will be wearing 'blue' high visibility jackets. A big thanks to Miss King for organising the 'J team' jackets and to Mr George for organising the 'S team jackets.

See the photo below of these high vis jackets.
