Testing season is here!
PSAT and SAT tests are the year-end state common measurement to see how well students met expectations in English language arts and mathematics. Colorado students in the 9th and 10th grades take PSAT tests. These are precursors to the SAT test that is taken by 11th-graders. Additionally, students can get connections to scholarship providers, access to online college and career planning materials, and feedback about challenging coursework. The 11th grade students will also participate in the Science CMAS assessment.
The dates for these assessments are as follows:
● SAT - April 12, 2023, 8:40am - 1:15pm
● PSAT 9th & 10th - April 13, 2023, 8:40am - 12:45pm
● CMAS 11th grade - April 20, 2023, 9:00am - 3:00pm
*After lunch students will have extended learning opportunities for the rest of the day. Students need to be with an adult or excused by a parent/guardian.
**Detailed bell schedule will follow after Spring Break.
REMINDERS:
Please avoid scheduling appointments during this time.
All students will need to bring their own calculator.
All 10th and 11th graders need to fill out this CONSENT FORM to answer college related questions. Students will receive those forms on March 20th.
Students are not allowed to have cell phones, smart watches, wireless earbuds, or headphones. We encourage them to leave these items at home or turn them in during the check-in process. All backpacks will be stored outside the testing rooms.
These tests are very important and we ask for your help in encouraging your child to do his/her very best. These tests are also a good measure for parents to know how well their child is performing compared to the district and state’s expectations. They show how each student’s results compare to other students around the district and state.
If you have any questions, please contact Janice Martinez, Assistant Principal/Assessment Coordinator at janice.martinez@weldre4.org or 970.833.7116

SHS Staff Spotlight!
Unicorns, Stitch, puppies, and bearded dragons: random things that bring smiles to the faces of most, whether they are fans or not. All of these things can be found, either in mention or trinket form, in the library at SHS. Librarian-Learning Coach Tasha Tolbert can tell you all about this fun collection of items, which are proudly displayed in the office behind the circulation desk or in the pages of the book collections she carefully curates.
Affectionately known by her first name, Tasha has been building the school’s library collection since before opening day at SHS in 2019 as a foundational member of the Instructional Leadership Team. “I worked with the principal and district library team to create an opening day collection that best serves our student and staff population, spending hours sifting through lists from Follette and visiting other schools to make sure our collection is awesome,” she described. Tasha continues this task multiple times a year, ensuring students have access to a wide range of perspectives and experiences.
Tasha attended John A. Logan Community College in IL for two years on a full ride volleyball scholarship where she earned an associate’s degree. After, she received a full ride academic scholarship at Southern Illinois University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a middle school endorsement and a minor in literature. After moving to Colorado, Tasha simultaneously earned two master’s degrees: one from the University of Colorado in Culturally Linguistically Diverse Education and another from University of Northern Colorado in School Library Education.
Tasha taught in secondary grades for six years before moving to the library. In her second year as a teacher librarian, Tasha achieved all five credentials for the Highly Effective Schools Through Library (HESTL) program through the Colorado Department of Education, becoming the first in the state to achieve this status all at the same time. In addition to collection curation, Tasha embraced a “bi-sac” model, designing the library space off a book store organized by genre to increase access to and interest in books for all students. This change took the library “from a traditional setting to a collaborative space that was an extension of the classroom,” Tolbert explained.
In addition to her teacher librarian role, Tasha also serves as a learning coach at SHS, supporting teachers as they grow as an educator. She described, “I enjoy watching people become who they are meant to be and being able to support them--to watch kids and teachers grow and to help them both inside and outside of the classroom, be a thought partner, be an advocate. This is one of the most rewarding experiences I have had in my career.”
Whether in her role as a learning coach “who supports teaching and learning in the building by advocating for teachers, providing a safe place to reflect and grow, and building efficacy to create an academic culture in the building” or leading a book club of eager readers, Tolbert continues to be a strong building block in the foundation upon which SHS was and continues to be built.

After Prom Donations
The Severance After Prom Committee is asking for monetary donations to help with the costs of an After Prom Party at The Summit. We want to host a safe and fun event for our students within walking distance from the Embassy Suites. At The Summit, will we be able to offer unlimited bowling and lazer tag, game cards and a pizza buffet. With the monetary donations, this will help keeping the dollar value lower for our students.
If you are unable to help with money donations, we are also asking for prize donations to do raffles for the students as well.
Also, if you are interested in helping with the after prom committee in any way, please reach out to severanceafterprom@gmail.com
Thank you,
Severance After Prom Committee

The process takes a few hours to complete, but the main application is then used for many of the available scholarships, making the process easier for students. And, special note, we have scholarships available for graduating seniors, current college students, AND non-traditional students.

We are so excited to welcome back our amazing Silver Knights staff! We would love to show them our support all throughout the year by providing a variety of snacks in their break room. Please join us in this simple act of appreciation that they will enjoy any time they just need a little something....:)
We have around 85 staff members and the snack sign-up dates are set at every two weeks. Bring however many snacks you feel inclined to share. Partner with a friend or a group if you would like to! Office staff or parent volunteers will re-stock the jars and baskets with any overflow snacks throughout the two weeks as needed.
You may sign up for a date below and bring your snack donations to the SHS front desk on that day. Ideas could include: fresh fruits or veggies, granola bars, individual chip/pretzel/cracker/cookie packs, dried fruit bars or snacks, beef jerky, popcorn packs, mints, gum, seasonal fun treats. Please bring items that are NUT FREE just for ease of everyone's enjoyment. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
