The Principal's POV on...celebrating Dr. King's legacy!

Click here for a quick read from Teaching Tolerance. In this short article, some great points are raised, along with some "do's & don'ts" as we reflect on Dr. King's legacy & our upcoming Black History Month activities. The best part of all: it was written by Coretta Scott King herself!

Although, it was written some time ago, the words of her opening paragraph are poignant today and definitely echo my point of view on a culturally response curriculum. Our instructional focus must move beyond the "symbolic." Learning activities must be substantive, and Dr. King's work (along with many other great African Americans) must be embedded throughout the curriculum beyond this holiday and beyond the confines of Black History Month! Thank you for a fantastic week & don't forget to share your thoughts via social media, email or during a Chat & Chew.

Showing Kindness Around the World: As part of our Kindness Challenge initiative, the Bullock School is joining hands to help others! See below for two wonderful initiatives that will take place through January 31st.

  • We are working with Ms. Romanczyk’s Kindergarten Class in Boston, MA to raise money for an organization called WIRES to help rescue sick, injured and orphaned wildlife impacted by the bushfires in Australia. Click here for details!
  • We are collecting donations for earthquake victims in Puerto Rico. Items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant and first aid kits can be dropped off in front of the library.

QSAC Facilities Visit: The NJDOE will be visiting us to do a facilities walk at some point this week. The focus for this visit won't be instruction, but they will be inspecting hallways, classrooms, boiler/art rooms, custodial closets, etc. See below for some important reminders!

  • Only bottom windows of interior doors can be covered. All top windows must be completely uncovered.
  • NO extension cords in classrooms or surge protectors plugged into other surge protectors.
  • NO items can be hanging from ceilings.
  • NO appliances in rooms (microwaves, refrigerators, coffee makers, etc.)
  • NO candles, air fresheners or anything that gives off a fragrance.
  • NO furniture brought in from home.
  • They will look for ceiling clearance. Rule of thumb: two rows of cinder blocks must be clear between any storage items and the ceiling.
  • Emergency evacuation egress procedures are posted at a student height.

Kindness Coins!

Our students are showing kindness throughout Bullock are rewarded with a Kindness Coin. Coins are collected and placed into our buckets on our “It’s Cool to be Kind” bulletin board.
