Houk Headlines

March 7- March 18

Important dates:

3/25 No School

3/28- 4/1 Spring Break

Please Note: Please remind your child to record his or her WEB reading minutes, on the March WEB calendar, on a daily basis.

We began our new unit last week and could not be more excited! In our new unit, we will be learning about different types of genres focusing especially on fables, folktales, and myths. This week, we read a "Miwok" myth called Two Bear Cubs and practiced determining the central message or moral of the story. We also read a myth called, The Raven and another called Fire. Throughout the next few weeks, we will be reading a variety of myths, fables, and folktales and practice finding the moral or central message of each text.

Lastly, in writing, we have still been very hard at work on our "My Life" writing projects. After 14 pages of writing and drawing, we are so close to being DONE with our soon-to-be published books! We cannot wait to see the finished products!

The past few weeks, we have been learning a lot about fractions. We learned what a fraction is, how to find a fraction of a set of objects, fractions more than one, and much more! We have also continued practicing our multiplication and division facts. Looking ahead, we will be taking an assessment on fractions prior to Spring Break.

In addition, we will continue to take multiplication timed tests 1-2 times per week to help gain fluency of facts. Please continue to encourage your child to practice his or her facts on a daily basis!

In science, we have been learning more about different properties of water. We did an experiment to show that when water is heated it expands and when water gets colder it contracts. We will be continuing our water science unit throughout the next few weeks.
