William Lloyd Garrison
William Lloyd Garrison was the author and publisher of the abolitionist newspaper The Liberator.He told everybody who read the newspaper that slavery is wrong and should be abolished.He and other abolitionists created the American Anti-slavery Society.They published newspapers and books that said that slaves should be freed.These newspapers and books were banned in the South.He was often harassed because of his newspapers and books.
Sojourner Truth
Sojourner Truth was an anti-slavery speaker. Was born a slave in New York ,but freed through gradual emancipation. She drew large audiences with her powerful speaking of lectures about slavery and women's rights. Abraham Lincoln gave her the job of counselor to freedmen in Washington during the Civil War.
Fredrick Douglass
Fredrick Douglass taught himself to read and write while he was a slave. He escaped and became a spokes man for the abolitionists movement. He published an abolitionists newspaper called The North Star. He also wrote an autobiography telling about the life of a slave.Once the Civil War started,he encouraged Lincoln to free slaves and recruit Northern African Americans to fight for the Union. After the war,he still fought for the rights of African Americans and Women.
Harriet Tubman
Harriet Tubman was an escaped slave and a very successful conductor of the Underground Railroad.The Underground Railroad is not underground or a railroad.She was known as Moses because she lead over 300 slaves to Canada from the South.
Harriet Beecher Stowe
Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote the book Uncle Tom's Cabin. This book became a best seller and told the terrible living ways of slaves to many Northerners. She often disagreed with President Lincoln about holding back slaves' freedom.
John Brown
John Brown,an abolitionist,went to Kansas after the Kansas-Nebraska act saying that slaves would be free or not by voting. He and his sons took matters into their own hands. They made violence in the place that was given the name bleeding Kansas. He attempted to raid the United States arsenal in Virginia. He had hoped to get his hands on guns and leading a slave revolt.His raid was unsuccessful. He and others who helped with the raid were captured by the troops of Robert E. Lee. He was found guilty and was hung to death.
