Tiger Update
Information/Updates about Pickerington High School Central
Message from Mr. Lanier
November 8 is a virtual learning day for students and a professional learning day for our staff. It is also election day. As a former government teacher and political science major, I encourage everyone to exercise their right to vote. It takes all of us to make our democratic process work.
We had a good week with our students and took some time on Wednesday to meet with all of them to conduct a mid-semester check. We introduced the CORE values that our staff has worked hard to identify and will be our driving force to bind our community together. The three CORE values are Trust, Integrity, and Empathy. You will start to see and hear more about how CORE values will 'TIE' Tiger Nation together. When we commit to our CORE values we all will find success.
Let's have a great week of learning!!
Let's Go Tigers,
Mr. Lanier

Information about the November 8 Bond Issue
Pickerington's Mayor Shows Support for Nov. 8 Bond Issue
Pickerington Mayor Lee Gray endorsed Pickerington Schools' bond issue during the regular Board of Education meeting on Oct. 24. Mayor Gray told the audience, "I generally don't get out in front of tax issues because I think it is a very personal issue. But on this one, I think this is a very important point in Pickerington's history. We need to get this right and we need to get it going. Because even after you pass it, it's going to take awhile for this to build out and it does affect the kid's performance and attitude."
"It's a great opportunity for our community," Gray continued. "If my friends are on the borderline, I want them to know I am 100% behind this."
You can watch Mayor Gray's full speech in the board meeting recording on our PLSD Communications YouTube channel, beginning at timecode 8:18. Thanks Mayor Gray for your support!
If passed on Nov. 8, the district’s capital plan, which includes the proceeds from the $89.930 million bond issue, will be used to:
- Build a new junior high school that can house up to 1,300 students
- Renovate all of Ridgeview Junior High to convert to a building holding separate kindergarten to fourth grade elementary and fifth to sixth grade middle schools; this creates an eighth elementary school that will house about 450 elementary students, and a fourth middle school that will house about 450 middle school students
- Add 24 additional classrooms at Central High School housing up to 650 students; upgrade the cafeteria, expanding capacity by 200 additional students; install secure entryways
- Add 18 additional classrooms to North High School housing up to 470 additional students; install secure entryways
- Renovate and upgrade multiple elementary schools to accommodate growth, making room for up to 375 additional students
More details about the bond issue can be found on our Nov. 8 Bond Issue Information webpage. Information about voting is available at the Vote Ohio website. Absentee and in-person voting is underway now and election day is just a week away — Nov. 8!

Counseling Office Weekly Update 11/4/22
Hope for the Holidays Grief Support
While most of us look forward to the holidays, many dread these days, because of their grief at the loss of a loved one. The PHSC School Counselors would like to help support students with their grief by offering a grief support group. This group will meet weekly during one of the lunch periods and focus on grieving during the holiday season. Students who would like to participate in this group, should complete this form.
Get involved!
Attention all students! No matter what the future brings, skills like teamwork, cooperation, creative problem-solving, decision-making and leadership will always be important. Many extracurricular activities allow the development of these skills that are transferable to school, family and future life. Here is the link to the list of activities available at PHSC. Your PHSC School counselors want to encourage students to get involved!
Attention Seniors!
Please remember that all Seniors must request transcripts at least 10 days prior to the application deadline! Here are the directions to request transcripts. Please make sure to add the college to “Colleges I’m applying to” AND click the box that says “Request Transcript”. Parents should bookmark this hub as a resource for planning for post-secondary exploration and opportunities as well as graduation information.
Financial Aid/Scholarships
October 1st was the opening day for Seniors to begin submitting their FAFSA. The Free Application For Student Aid, is the most important thing Seniors can do to get money for college. Seniors can also start searching for and completing scholarship applications. Here is a list of the scholarships our high schools have put together to help students locate scholarship opportunities. The Senior Hub has a scholarship presentation with other scholarship resources. Now is the time to start this process!
Attention Juniors and Seniors!
Click on the link to learn about upcoming college and career visits for November. Don’t forget to register through Naviance 2 days (or more) prior to the visit.
Volunteers needed!
Your PHSC school counselors would like to offer career information to our students through people in the community sharing information about their careers. Anyone who would like to visit our school and present to our students about their career, should complete this career speaker interest form. The format/process would be similar to the college admissions visits which includes:: scheduling a 30-40 minute presentation in our media center, students register to attend, one counselor is present, teachers are notified. Speakers would be asked to share the following information: Day in the life of the career, training, average starting salary, best things about the career, demand, challenging things about the career, advancement/further training opportunities.
Attention Juniors!
The Handshake Students are a diverse group of high school students; they come from different schools, different families, and different backgrounds, but they all share three common traits. The students in the Handshake Program want to continue their education after high school, they're coachable, and they have grit. Handshake America believes that with these qualities, students have what it takes to be successful in life. The Handshake Program provides the students with an opportunity to get out of their hometown “bubbles” and connect with their peers as well as adults who have had success in their lives. The students learn that these common traits will help drive them to success.
Apply to be a Handshake America Student APPLICATIONS DUE NOVEMBER 16
2023 AP Exam Information
This information is to review the Advanced Placement (AP) Exam that will be held during the weeks of May 1 through May 12. AP exams are available for students who complete AP courses. Successful completion of an AP exam can award potential college credit. In some cases, AP exams are also used as an alternative to graduation testing requirements. Students and families interested in college credit should consult with their college of choice to determine the exam score needed to earn college credit.
CREATE A COLLEGE BOARD ACCOUNT
If a student is new to taking AP courses, they should create a College Board account. Students should have already received directions from their AP teacher to complete this in order to avoid creating duplicate accounts. Students who completed an AP class previously should use their existing College Board Account. The act of creating this account and using the classroom join codes is how a student orders the exam so it is important that students do this promptly to avoid any issues moving forward. Students have been working with their AP teachers to join using the teacher’s "AP Join Code". If they have yet to join the AP Classroom on CollegeBoard, they will need to work with their AP teacher to complete this step.
AP EXAM DATES
The 2023 AP exams will be administered over two weeks between May 1-5 and May 8-12 with the exception of AP Art. All AP Art portfolios are to be submitted no later than May 5.
Here is a current AP Exam schedule provided by the CollegeBoard: 2023 AP Exam Schedule
AP EXAM COST
The cost for an AP Exam will be $97 per exam. Please keep in mind that the AP Physics C and AP Micro/Macro Economics courses have two exams associated with their class.
For students who qualify and participate in the Free and Reduced Lunch program, their exams will be free. To qualify for this AP Fee Reduction, students must have qualified for free/reduced lunch. If you are unsure if you qualify, please contact Food Services at 614-833-3645.
The $97 fee will be added to your child’s student fees later in the year.
EXTENDED OPT-OUT DEADLINE TO 10/29
We are requiring students wanting to cancel one or more of their AP exams to let us know by October 29th of their intention to cancel their exams. Please use this link to cancel your AP Exam: 2023 AP Cancellation Form
If an exam is canceled after the October 29th deadline, there will be a $40 late cancellation fee assessed by the CollegeBoard.
LATE CANCELLATION/LATE REGISTRATION FEES
If a student cancels their exam after the October 29th deadline, there will be a $40 late cancellation fee. Additionally, if a student adds their AP exam after the October 29th deadline, there will be a $40 late registration fee. New students will be exempt from the late registration fee if they are transferring from another district and use a transfer code to join their PHSC class.
EXAM SCHEDULE
The following is the exam schedule for the 2023 AP Testing Season. Please note that students must arrive 30 minutes prior to the testing start date. Once the exam has begun, late admissions will not be permitted. As such, students should make plans with their parent/guardian for transportation to and from exams.
May 5: AP 3D, 2D, and Drawing physical portfolio construction

“Steel Magnolias” by Robert Harling
THE STORY: The action is set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, ("I’m not crazy, I’ve just been in a bad mood for forty years"); an eccentric One towards the end and there’s one that’s Uber what time and we will start here tomorrow millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M’Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in town), is about to marry a “good ole boy.” Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy when, in the second act, the spunky Shelby (who is a diabetic) risks pregnancy and forfeits her life. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on the underlying strength—and love—which give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.
