A weekly update from campus...

January 15, 2016

Hello Norris families,

Mistakes and failures. Yes, you read that right. It is something that we don't often speak about publicly and we rarely model how to handle them for our children. Even more candidly, we get very nervous when our children experience them.

A parent I met with recently suggested that he has noticed that parents, himself included, don't readily accept failure in children. We want them to be the best of the best. We want them to work harder. We are afraid they won't succeed.

We are moving into more difficult concepts across our grade levels and mistakes and drops in grades may happen. We might even see a failing grade. Students may feel like they are lost and don't understand. We never want a student to be frustrated to the level that they quit and we surely don't want them to feel as though all is lost if they make a mistake in their work. Not even a failing grade.

If we see a student fail an assignment, as a faculty, we want to model to the student that action needs to be taken and that failure sometimes happens. Think about that a moment. Think of a time you failed at something. How did you recover? What steps did you take? I have a hunch it had something to do with grit, perseverance, determination, and guidance from a family member, a friend, a boss, maybe even a teacher.

Let's think of how we can help our children to see mistakes and/or failures as springboards for action!

Enjoy your long weekend!

Norris Super Stars....

We are working on our sense of community. If your child has done something unique and amazing, like Addie, please tell them to stop by and tell me. I'd love to share what our Norris students are accomplishing outside of school as well as in school!

Television, iPods, iPads, laptops tablets and smart-phones…Today’s kids are exposed to an average of seven hours of “screen-time” each and every day, and the impact of those media messages can shape many of their perceptions and actions. Media Madness provides parents and caregivers the tools to successfully manage their children’s “screen time”, effectively monitor media messages and content, and realistically modify your approach as children grow and technology advances. This program expands on the following issues:

· Scale of information and vast number of people that can access it.

· Dangers of social media anonymity and protecting personal privacy

· Current sexting phenomenon

· Negative health effects and body image influence

· Interactive addiction

· Strategies for beneficial media use

· Awareness of marketing and media as big business- perception is reality!
