What is Racism?
According to researchers from the Australian National University and Western Sydney University, 40% of non-white students ages five to nine reported experiencing racial discrimination by their peers.
According to Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. From 2013 to 2017, white patients in the US received better quality health care than about 34% of Hispanic patients, 40% of Black patients, and 40% of Native American patients.
Causes of Racism?
For example, jugding people to quickly basied on their appearance, origin or nationality.
Another possible cause is we take on the view of people around us. For example, if our family or friends are acting racist we may also start acting racist.
A final cause is we blame others for our problems. When we feel angry, sad or frustrated we often look for someone to blame. People who are diffrent than us, for example they have diffrent skin color or talk diffrently then us are an easy target to blame.
Effects of Racism
First, it creates chronic strees which leads to actual changes in hormones. This can lead to many sicknesses.
Additionally, people or kids who expirenced racism have smaller chances to have a good succesfull life.
A final possible effect is low self-esteem. If you expirence racism, you can have low self-esteem, and don't accept who you are and how you look.
Solutions
First, we should take a look at ourselves and ask a question: how we talk about other people, and how we treat other people.
In addition, teachers and parents should teach their children about racism and race. It's really important to teach about it, so children can learn and be respectfull to others.
Finally, we need to speak up when we hear or see racism or racial discrimination in any form. Empowering ourselves and each other is an important way to start.
