Dear Parents,

Can you believe it is already May? As I look back on this school year, it amazes me how fast it has gone by. It seems like only yesterday that we were welcoming all of you here to our annual Drop-in/Drop-off before the first day of school. However, we are nearly finished with the 2021-2022 school year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you parents for your level of support and involvement this year.

To begin with, since the COVID restrictions have lifted, we have appreciated the volunteers who have helped during various events such as Volunteer Fridays, picture day, field trips, outdoor school, and general classroom assistance. Your time and effort have made a huge difference in the lives of our students. Our students love seeing parents involved in their education.

Once again, thank you so much for your support and generous time donation. We look forward to continuing to build our partnership with you as we realize the importance of home and school being on the same page. Please continue to feel free to become a volunteer as we want you to be involved!

Pueden creer que ya estamos en el mes de mayo? Me sorprende lo rápido que ha pasado este año escolar! Parece que fue ayer cuando les dimos la bienvenida a todos aquí a nuestro evento de conocer a sus maestros, cuál fue antes del primer dia de clases. Sin embargo, casi hemos terminado con el año escolar 2021-2022. Me gustaría aprovechar esta oportunidad para agradecerles a todos los padres por su apoyo y participación este año.

Para empezar, desde que se levantaron las restricciones de COVID, apreciamos a los voluntarios que ayudaron durante varios eventos, como los viernes de voluntarios, el dia de fotografía, las excursiones, la escuela al aire libre y la asistencia general en los salones de clases. Su tiempo y esfuerzo han hecho una gran diferencia en la vida de nuestros estudiantes. A nuestros estudiantes les encanta ver a los padres involucrados en su educación. Una vez más, muchas gracias por su apoyo y generosa donación de tiempo. Esperamos continuar fomentando nuestra asociación con usted a debido que nos damos cuenta de la importancia de que el hogar y la escuela están en la misma página. Por favor de continuar de sentirse libre de servir de voluntario ya que queremos que participe!

1. Sharing your family's heritage by creating a poster-board representing your culture. Posters will be set up in our Grant Garden for everyone to enjoy. To sign up, please email box_lisa@salkeiz.k12.or.us
2. Volunteering your time.

• You can help with prep-work over the next 2 weeks. Email:box_lisa@salkeiz.k12.or.us to schedule a time!
• Helping with set-up (4:30pm - 5:30pm) and/or clean-up (8:00pm-9:00pm) on May 19th.
• Serving food at the Kermes on May 19th. There are 3 shifts to choose from.
• Preparing food for the Kermes. We are looking for volunteers to make horchata, pozole and esquites.

This month our character trait focus is friendship. Developing healthy friendships are one of the most important life skills that students can have. It makes all the difference when kids can recognize the difference between friendships that are life giving and lift us up compared to friendships that are draining and bring us down. It’s important that we help children not only recognize how to tell the difference between friends that lift us up and people that tear us down, but also how to be a kind friend themselves. Children often have a hard time thinking outside of themselves and can focus primarily on the ways in which they feel wronged by others without seeing their role in conflict. They may wonder why a friendship fell apart without being able to reflect on where they were not being a caring friend themselves. We can help our kids with this self-reflection by sticking with the “golden rule”: treat others how you would like to be treated. And remember, we can model healthy relationships as we help our kids learn how to engage in healthy relationships themselves!

Este mes nuestra característica del mes es la amistad. Desarrollar amistades saludables es una habilidad muy importante tener. Hace toda la diferencia cuando los niños pueden distinguir entre las amistades que da vida y ánimo de las amistades que los derrumbe. Es importante que nosotros ayudamos a los niños aprender no solo reconocer los diferentes tipos de amistades que nos encontraremos en la vida, pero también como ellos pueden ser un buen amigo o un amiga amable. Muchas veces es difícil para los niños pensar fuera de sí mismo, a menudo se enfocan en cómo se sienten cuando la otra persona lo tratan mal o cuando están en conflicto con sus amigos/as. Ellos suelen preguntarse: cómo puede ser que una amistad se derrumbó, sin poder reflexionar en donde no estaban siendo buenos amigos. Podemos apoyar a los niños recordar la “regla de oro” cual es que tratemos a los demás como nos gustaría que nos trataran. Y recuerda, ¡la mejor manera que podemos enseñar a nuestros hijos/as como tener amistades saludables es de mostrarselos en nuestros vidas!
