School Guidelines
Schools introduce the STEAM Fair projects to students as soon as possible. Students may do a project in one of the following areas: Science, Technology/Engineering, Art or Mathematics. Technology may be integrated into any project but is not a requirement. Students are not required to do a project in all areas. Students should be given a choice.
Science/Engineering projects and Math projects have the potential to move on to regional fairs. Art projects will be displayed at MACA. Technology projects will be displayed at the Central Office. *Please note that any visual arts and crafts project created for the County Wide Title I District Event at the Carson House may be used as an art project entry.
K-3 may do class projects and grades 3-12 may do individual or group projects. Class projects can NOT move on to the regional science fair. Group projects having 4 or more students are NOT eligible for the regional science fair.
Schools may send:
K-3:
top 3 class projects for science, technology/engineering
top 3 math
top 3 art
3-5:
top 3 individual or group projects for science, technology/engineering
top 3 math
top 3 art
(potentially 18 projects per school: 9 from k-3, and 9 from 3-5)
6-12: top 3 projects per grade level per subject
(potentially 3 science, technology/engineering projects, 3 math projects and 3 art projects per grade level)
NOTE: Projects will not be judged at the county level. However, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners from each category from each school will be recognized at the STEAM Showcase for Parents on Thursday, December 7.
Schools will send their projects (class and individual/group ) to the Universal building at MTCC on November 28, 2017. Drop off will be between 2-5pm. Projects should be labeled indicating 1st, 2nd or 3rd place, the specific grade level and the category. These projects will be on display during the County’s STEAM Expo events.
Use the following LABEL on the back of all projects brought to the Expo.
Eligible projects at the school level will move on to the perspective Regional Fairs.
Regional Science Fair Information: December 19, 2017
Registration deadline is December 12. Project entry should be handled at the school level since students are required to register online using their school email accounts. Cost per entry is $10 and will be paid for by McDowell County Schools. McDowell County Schools will take an activity bus to the regional science fair for qualifying students. Schools should plan for a chaperone to accompany their students going to the Regional Science Fair. Registration links are not available at this time, but information will be shared as it is received.
Regional Math Fair Information
The NCCTM Western Regional Math Fair will be held Saturday, March 24, 2018. Registration deadline is March 2. Cost per entry is $10 and will be paid for by McDowell County Schools.
