Language Arts

The spelling lesson this week teaches the suffixes s and es. Today we talked about how s is added to most words to make them plural, but when a word ends in s, ss, x, ch and sh, es is added.

We will continue reading non-fiction texts and ask questions before, during and after reading. We will also discuss the STP strategy, which means to "Stop, Think, and Put it in your own words." We will practice this in class together and during guided reading to help improve reading comprehension.

In writing, we are continuing to research the first Thanksgiving. After we complete the research, we will begin writing opinion pieces on whether or not we would have liked to attend the first Thanksgiving.

Math

We are working on adding two digit numbers both with and without regrouping. This week we will practice re-writing two digit addition problems (from horizontal to vertical) and will add three or four two digit numbers.

There will be an addition fact test this Thursday. Please continue to help your child study for these tests. Fact fluency is very important, especially now that we are adding two digit numbers.

Science

Our weather test will be tomorrow. Your child should have brought a science/social studies notebook home last week to begin studying. Please make sure they return their notebook to school tomorrow.

Social Studies

This week we will begin our social studies unit on economics. We will begin discussing the difference between a want and a need and will learn about goods and services.
