Veteran’s Day 2020
Park Lawn Elementary School Recognition
Who is a veteran?
Anyone who served for any length of time in any branch of the military. The branches of the military are the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. Maybe it’s your mother, father, sister, brother, aunt, uncle, grandfather, grandmother, cousin, neighbor, or even teacher. You can all be very proud of them. Many have given much to keep us safe and free.
How was Veteran’s Day established?
Veteran’s Day was originally called Armistice Day. It marked the day that World War 1 officially ended, November 11, 1918. In 1954, its name was officially changed to Veterans Day and it became a day to honor all veterans. On Wednesday, November 4th, Park Lawn will observe Veterans Day. We are honoring our veterans prior to November 11th in order to provide time for a special video collaboration we will be creating across all 5 Oconomowoc elementary schools.
What is the best way to honor a veteran?
Thank him or her for their service to our country. It is because of them that we are fortunate to live in a country where we enjoy our freedom and safety every day. As part of the observance, PKL students are invited to decorate and bring in a star in honor of a veteran or someone currently serving. You may use the star included, or trace it onto cardboard or colored paper. Please write the name(s) of the person(s) being honored on the star(s), along with any other information you may wish to include. If attaching a picture please use a copy, as we would not want to lose precious family photos. Students will have the opportunity to share about their special person in class November 4th, discuss veterans day, and dress in RED, WHITE, and BLUE.FOLLETT BOOK ORDERS
Please call the office to arrange pick up.
Update regarding specials classes
Thank you to all of our elementary families for helping us have a great start to the school year. As you know, our students have been participating in their specials classes mostly within their classrooms this year. The District has been monitoring and tracking the health of our staff and students and our mitigation measures since the start of the year. Based on what we have learned and how effective we believe our mitigation measures have been, we are working to restructure our specials classes so they can begin to shift back into their designated classrooms. Our students will begin experiencing these changes in the coming weeks. Teachers of these classes have received a detailed list of expected mitigation measures which must be in place to ensure an optimal environment. As with all classes, we will continue to encourage learning outside as the weather and activities permit and some specials classes may remain in the homeroom classroom again based on lessons and activities. Thank you for your continued support and partnership. Mrs. Jones
