From the Principal's Pen...

It's finally here!! The last week of school in 2015 - can you believe it?? This school year is flying by at lightning speed and it's sure to resume with a vengeance when we return in 2016. We have had MANY notable accomplishments and successes with scholars, staff & our parent community so far this year and I can't wait to see what 2016 holds for Cannon Elementary: A GCISD STEM School!


One of my favorite activities for this final week of 2015 will be celebrating the holiday with all of YOU!! Our staff holiday party is after school on Monday and all you need to do is show up! We know that the holiday season can be a stressful time, so our Zen-inspired holiday party will be the perfect time to just slow down, relax, and unwind, all while enjoying some food and fun with friends!

Lisa's Coaching Corner

PTA is providing our scholars a unique opportunity at our school on January 22nd because "Dinosaur George: Museum in the Classroom" will be here!!


"Dinosaur George: Museum in the Classroom" gives students the unique opportunity to see exhibits of prehistoric life from around the world, with over 150 museum quality exhibit pieces from the earliest life on earth. From giant Texas reptiles, to dinosaurs and Ice Age mammals, students will see firsthand some of the creatures that once roamed Texas. Dinosaur George: Museum in the Classroom provides a fun learning environment in Spanish and English! During the exhibit, staff experts will be on hand to answer questions, and Museum in the Classroom is a self-guided tour so that teachers and students can learn at their own pace. Dinosaur George: Museum in the Classroom is one of the largest traveling school exhibits in the country."


Please plan to take time as a team to look at the lessons provided (in English and Spanish) to see how you can enrich this great learning opportunity. The lessons are in science, math and language arts. Be prepared to share your ideas in January at PLC.

Holiday Energy Reminders

All staff will be receiving a Winter Holiday break Energy Checklist by email from the district on Monday, 12/14. This checklist needs to be completed, signed and taped to your door, prior to leaving for the holiday. We will print a copy and place in each staff member's mailbox as a convenience.


As a campus, we received a 98% on our Thanksgiving Holiday campus audit. We only had one classroom where the printer was not turned off! The district expects 100% participation on these efforts from each campus, in order for us to truly realize the savings these energy conservation efforts makes!

REMINDERS & UPDATES

  • IMPORTANT REPORT CARD/PROGRESS REPORT REMINDER Now that all of our grade reporting has gone digital, please make sure that you are notifying parents when all grades are posted and ready for viewing. Don't forget to include directions on how to view these reports, as we help parents transition to digital reporting. Under no circumstances, should a parent be hearing/learning for the first time that their child has a failing grade in a subject/class through their receipt of a progress report/report card. Personal contact must be made to all parents to inform them of academic concerns about a scholar, prior to their receipt of a progress report or report card. Additionally, please make sure you are scheduling parent conferences, so that you can work together with the parent to help develop a plan for their child to make progress and be successful.


  • HOLIDAY PROGRAMS & PLANS! Tis the season for holiday programs galore! Our staff holiday party will be Monday, 12/14 right after school, in the library. On Tuesday, our friends from the Grapevine Church of Christ will provide a staff holiday lunch in the lounge. On Wednesday, 12/16, from 8:45-9:30, all of our staff and scholars will have the chance to hear our own Cannon Choir Holiday Concert in the cafeteria! In addition, the choirs will have an evening performance on Thursday, 12/17 from 5:30-7:00. Friday, 12/18, will be a fun-filled day of holiday festivities, beginning with our whole school Holiday Sing-Along in the cafeteria, beginning at 8:30, followed by classroom holiday parties. Please include information about holiday happenings in all of your parent communications and don't forget to remind parents about early release on Friday @ 11:45.


  • 2014-2015 CAMPUS TAPR REPORT NOW AVAILABLE Please take a few moments to review Cannon's TAPR (Texas Academic Performance Report) report for 2014-2015. This report replaced the AEIS report several years ago and is a culmination of our staff & student demographics, accountability and academic performance, as well as our state accountability rating for 2014-2015. All campuses are required to make this report available to all families. It will be shared through the parent newsletter electronically, as well as through paper copies that will be available in the office for families that cannot access it online. Our school report card will be made available in January 2016 and will also be made available to families at that time. Click here to see Cannon's TAPR for 2014-2015.


  • CHAMPIONS UPDATE Judy Reta, Cannon's Champions representative, has provided a wonderful update about the topic covered at the GCISD Champions meetings for November & December. Click here to read Judy's report. You might just learn something about GCISD that you didn't know! Thanks Judy!


  • GCISD STEM PROGRAM EXPANDS TO HIGH SCHOOL! Cannon Elementary became the district’s first STEM program for the 2013-2014 school year and seeing the need to continue this focused STEM instruction, the district expanded the program into Grapevine Middle School in the Fall of 2014. The program at GMS now includes students in sixth and seventh grade, and in August 2016 it will extend to eighth-grade. Currently, the district’s STEM program stops at the middle school level; however, campus and district leaders are looking ahead to the future and beginning in the Spring 2016, staff at Grapevine High School will begin professional development with the aim of offering specialized STEM instruction for ninth-grade students in the Fall of 2017. The decision to locate the high school STEM program at GHS was made after considering the curricular resources already in place at the GCISD Technology Education and Career Center, which currently serves both Colleyville Heritage and GHS students. As with the program at Grapevine Middle School, the STEM Academy will continue to progress each year with students, eventually becoming a kindergarten through twelfth-grade initiative. While the district and Grapevine High School are very early in the planning stages, the district is looking ahead and will continue to provide updates throughout the next year as the STEM program in GCISD continues to grow!


  • STAY UP TO DATE WITH GARDEN NEWSLETTER! Heather Hagar, our garden coordinator, has created a monthly newsletter that will be sent out to all staff to keep us abreast of all garden-related news! Be sure to check out her first edition of The Seedling here! Big thanks to Heather for her work to provide us with update, lesson ideas, and important reminders!!

LEAD GCISD PODCAST- CHECK IT OUT!

Have you taken the time yet to listen to the new Lead GCISD podcast? Each podcast lasts anywhere from 14-20 minutes in length. I listen to them while I am driving home from work! There are already four episodes in the podcast feed about a variety of topics relevant to GCISD. One of the episodes even features GCISD students from O.C. Taylor elementary school!
