On the Standards Front . . .
The Data Team meetings have been a nice forum for conversations about Standards-Based Grading/Learning and to practice the analysis of student data. In the coming meetings, I hope those rich conversations continue and that you explore the challenges you're seeing with your own practice. Now that you have identified your priority standards, I hope that you will take some time to set goals and plan for the implementation of the assessment of standards.
Most of you have been using the standards to guide your instruction; next year, is the opportunity to shift your thinking and focus of standards-work to the assessment of standards rather than just the product (test, speech, project, etc.). The decision of the proficiency scale is a huge step in moving the thinking forward in the assessment of progress with standards rather than just the product of student work. Using your priority standards, begin to think about the products you currently have and determine where you can begin to assess the standards within that product rather than the product itself.
I am so humbled to be a part of this staff and to have the opportunity to work with you. From the depths of your classroom, you may not be aware of the progress this staff is making in the initiative of SBG/L, as I know, last year when I was in the classroom, I did not see the forest for the clump of trees sitting in front of me. I have the privilege of being your coach and seeing the forest instead of just the individual trees. It is my hope that as you set goals and practice, the forest will become clearer to you and you will even see the beauty of what lies beneath. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance in planning, goal setting, or implementing. #nobetterplacetowork
