MEET MR. JAMES OLSON

Big picture

Hello HSE! I am Mr Olson, your friendly campus IT Specialist! I was born and raised in the state of Georgia. I lived most of my early life between Stone Mountain and Suwanee. I am the middle child of five with two older sisters and two younger brothers. Baseball has always been a passion of mine since I was young. It wasn't until I was introduced to swimming that I found something I truly excelled at, even if it was something I never had a true passion for. I love math.

While I was attending Brigham Young University of Idaho, I became both a tutor and a teacher assistant in the developmental math department. I was given the opportunity to teach college courses whenever the head of the department was out on business or family matters. I met Mrs. Olson while at school. We have been married for 12 years and we both have a heart for education. We have two children together. Whitney, who is currently in second grade at our school and Kaleb, who is 2 years old. This is my third year at this HSE. Before working here, I worked 3 years as a district SPED Computer Technician for Cy-Fair ISD. Before that, I was a teacher assistant at the world renowned Dorothy Carlton Center.

Currently, I'm finding new things that spark my interest. I'm coaching baseball for the first time (only other time I coached was for swimming when I was 17/18). Volleyball is becoming more and more of a serious interest now that the district has made it an event for staff. I enjoy my time getting to know the students at this school and the staff that work here. I do have a good sense of humor and enjoy having a good laugh. Last of all, I'll list some of my favorite shows/stories. Attack on Titan would be my number one, followed by Black Sails and Arcane. Thank you for taking the time to read my shortened biography.

MARCH 13TH-17TH

Hi HSE Family!!! Welcome to March! February was particularly busy for me as I received an influx of referrals, pushed into a few classrooms, and helped with the black history program all while managing my regular caseload of students and taking classes. Although a bit overwhelmed, I love being busy and productive.

One of my favorite activities I did with the students in a few classes last month was a Mental Health Check-in. It gave the students an opportunity to share their feelings and feel heard. I asked the students how many of them felt welcomed to share their feelings with their parents and shockingly many of them said they don't feel like they have a safe space to share their feelings with their parents. Parent's, I implore you to think about your connection with your children and how often you check in with them, allowing them to share their feelings and concerns without interruption. You may be surprised by your own answer.

As a counselor, I realize that it's not always easy to connect with your children because the world is so much different these days and you simply may not know where to start or what to say. My counseling colleagues noticed this trend at their campuses as well. Therefore, we decided to collaborate and share ideas on how we can help parents connect with their children. As we gather resources, I will share them with you. We hope to implement workshops/parent night's that focus on different areas of mental and emotional wellness.

Below are few resources I used last month with my students! If you have any questions please contact me.

AUTHORS' VIRTUAL VISIT

On February 21st, HSE was fortunate to have a wonderful opportunity to visit with 2 authors, Sofia LaPuente and Jarrod Shusterman, who have recently authored the new book, "Retro". Ms. Sharp, part of our 6th grade team was able to pepper the authors with questions that our students had written for nearly an hour. We are very grateful to Ms. LaPuente and Mr. Shusterman for joining us and giving our students a unique chance to find out how an author comes up with their ideas, what the writing process is like, where they get their character inspiration from, etc. Multiple copies of the book are now available in our school library and classroom libraries for the students to access.

Ms. Sharp, her students, and some invited staff members were able to meet the authors virtually.

Important Information regarding Student Attendance from Ms. Acosta

Ensuring that our students are at school every day is vital to a student’s success. The Texas attendance rules state that a student has to be in a class at least 90 percent of the time in order to get credit for the class. The 90 percent rule applies to most absences, including excused absences. The Student Handbook explains our school’s guidelines on absences, tardies, and making up missed schoolwork. Becoming familiar with the school’s policies will help you manage your child’s attendance and ensure that he or she avoids too many missed school days.

Although perfect attendance is the goal, it’s not always possible. Therefore, please keep the following points in mind:

  • If your student is absent you will have 3 days to provide a note by the parent or doctor otherwise, the attendance will stay as an unexcused absence.
  • The parent excuse note should state the following:
    1.) Full student name
2.) Reason of absence in detail for record purposes.
3.) The date(s) the student was absent.
  • Parent-written excuse notes need to be on letter-size paper(8X10). We will not accept sticky notes or torn-off pieces of paper
  • Three accumulated tardies are considered one absence.

Message from our Admin

Hello HSE Family,

For morning drop off, we're requiring all parents to stay in their car and follow morning drop off either in the front of the school or the North arrival area.

Please do not park in the campus area to walk your students. Parents are supposed to stay in their cars and drive to the drop-off areas so that students can get out of the cars.

For the safety of our students and yours, please do not park on Brook River Drive and walk your child across Gessner Road. Gessner Road is a very busy road with a set speed limit of 40 MPH. Also, DO NOT STOP AND DROP YOUR CHILD OFF GESSNER ROAD! Thank you for understanding!

We will keep the first U-Turn open when you come from Gessner Rd (It was closed today but it will not be closed again). Please do not use the second U-Turn and please do not cut in line.

We will have a police officer several days a week to reinforce these issues.

Have a good day!

NO STUDENT DROP-OFF IS ALLOWED BEFORE 7:00AM!

Please do not drop off your student(s) at the school before 7:00am.
