Letter from the Principal

Dear Lions Park Families,

As we wrap up our third week of school, our students are settling into the classroom and school routines. A lot of exciting learning is already taking place. It has been a joy to visit classrooms this week and see the many different activities students are engaged in across content areas.

Teachers continue to model and practice classroom routines and expectations. We have a reteaching time available during recess for students who may need additional reteaching and practice throughout the year. This time is run by teachers, and there are books, videos and opportunities to get up and role play expected behaviors.

We are currently doing our fall benchmarking. We do this using a variety of assessments that are used districtwide. Students have taken MAP (Measures of Academic Progress). Students took two computerized MAP tests- one in reading and one in math. Each test took approximately one hour. Also, students participate in brief assessments to look at their reading fluency and math problem solving. The reading fluency test involves having students read three passages aloud for one minute per passage. The math problem solving test is another computerized test. Teachers also read with each student individually and orally ask them questions to determine their reading level. Teachers will meet at our data days later this month to look at the information gathered and determine which students need additional support or enrichment and then set team goals to meet the needs of their current students.

We are hopeful it has been a seamless transition for your child. However, it is perfectly normal for concerns or questions to arise. You are strongly encouraged to start by talking with your child’s teacher if there is something that is worrying you or your child about his or her school experience. If you don’t feel better after a conversation with the teacher, you are welcome to tell the teacher you are going to reach out to me or Mrs. Bielenda to join the conversation as you continue to work together to find a mutually agreeable solution.
