Create rules and expectations: enforce them consistently.
Create consistency wherever possible: maintain routines and manage expectations even through change.
Foster a close, warm relationship: it is possible to have a nurturing relationship AND have strong rules.
Talk about emotions: Both positive and negative.
Model self-control and problem-solving: help them to solve their own problems, try not to solve it for them.
Build strong communication skills: talk to them about their day and read together every day.
